taken from:

http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~pete...cs/electronics

Level 8:

Used on the 4x4 sedan (RS) Cosworth, has twice the memory storage capacity (128Kb instead of 64Kb) as Level 1 and Level 6. That's why chips can not be interchanged.
Level 8 was available in 2 type since the engine in the 4x4 was available with and without hego-sensor (i.e. with and without catalytic convertor).
Can be recognised by not having mounting flanges and a green or red label with WD48.08.
The one with the green label and second code IAW048/01 is for the catalytic convertor (US83) model.
The one with the red label and second code IAW048/02 is for the non catalytic convertor (15/04) model.
It is uncertain if units/chips can be interchanged between red and green types/engines.

yep, if it had a cat from the factory ( ie green top saph or any escos) then it had a knock sensor and a lambda probe in the turbo for emmisions regs.

Ryan,
They are a waste of time as the adjustments (when they work properly)
ONLY affect light load ignition.

Yes and NO. !!!!

The software is just about good enough but the sensor is not in a good place
plus, as the engine wears, extra mechanical noise can cause false triggers
and REDUCE light load engine power !

Also, No two engines are exactly the same resonant frequency and therfore
will have different software requirements !!!!
It is set up as the best of the averages but IMO is worthless !!!

would a live map be able to allow for the slight differences in ressonance and wear per each engine, or i suppose just get it mapped properly so it doesn't knock anyway

so it will only work (nearly) properly with a very good condition engine then?
bit of a shame

It is best described as a compromise.

I have a feeling that most modified chips will ignore it anyway.

it was mainly for my looms simon, so i wouldnt have to ask the customer if they had a knock sensor or not, jsut what car and what ECU they were running.

Simon,
Is there benefit in disconnecting the knock sensor then, to avoid the potential interference from extraneous noise??? If the engine is set up correctly, it shouldn't knock anyway hopefully? What possesed Ford to fit the sensor in the sump fange in the first place??

When my car was on P8 factory ecu, I disconnected the knock sensor but the
unconnected cable to the ecu could act like an arial and this could cause false knock reaction.
To avoid this, I wired a 10k resistor across the ecu terminals where the knock sensor connected
and removed the wires.

Not saying everyone should do this but it worked for me !!!

Ryan, I think you will have to include the knock and lambda wiring as options
or always fit them. Either way not everyone will be pleased !
That is life

yeah very true Simon, cheers for the extra bit of info.

I will do it as you said, have it as standard but give them the option if they want it removed.
