I don't think I'd go replica route, they can be cool little cars with their own character in their own right, think, smooth, lots of lowering and some retro style wheels.

if you have no realistic way of storing/funding the cossie then get rid. buy as good a base model mk3/4 escort in readiness for your first car. in the meantime accumulate turbo engine/brakes ect and rebuild it so that its kosher to build into a sleeper when the time is right. a base model escort looks cool as lowered a touch on nice wheel. driving a quick sleeper is rewarding AND it doesnt generate as much bad attention. rst engines arent too pricey neither is a decent base model escort.

Why waste money buying anything until you've passed your test? You are 16, at college with no/very little income at the moment. Soon you will need money for driving lessons which aint cheap. If you are earning money from a part time job start saving and as soon as you pass your test buy the best that you can afford to run and insure, until then the any money you spend on a car is wasted.

Oh yeah, flog the sapph shell and let somebody else worry about what to do with it.

Even a 3 -4 k saph is a expensive thing to run as they need way too much never mind a bare shell

Deffinately all that work then its ended quickly by loosing control of a turbocharged motor when it comes on boost on the first day of driving it then theres finding the stupid bits which will be missing from building up a empty shell, and thats if there is any metal left on the car after being sat on a driveway for 6+ years, weigh it in for scrap and buy a cheap little first car.

I would sell the Sierra asap its not fun sometimes waiting weeks just to save a little money for service items let alone serious work/parts ect.
I insured my MK2 xr2 turbo at 19 in 1997 for £820 3rd party only though. So it was possible back then .
Mk2 fiesta would be my choice and as time passed the engine and chassis would improve. 1.1 ohv in my opinion are still good fun and are bulletproof that would be my 1st engine then onto the 1.6cvh on carbs and finally you could use the rs cvh and chase medium power cossies for fun

Totally agree you can't run a Cossie on a shoe string.

A lot of sensible advice in this thread!

I used to be a lot like you are at your age, wanting the fast cars straight away etc.....

In the end, my dad convinced me to start off small and work my way up to the faster stuff.

I saved up as much money as I could and when I passed my test, bought an H plate 1.4 Orion Equipe in blue and payed for the insurance outright, something I couldn't have done if I'd chosen an RST or similar. Ok, that was 13 years ago now and things are a bit different now unfortunately but you catch my drift.

6 months later, much to my old man's disapproval, I bought a Series 2 RST which due to money being tight as I was on apprentice wages, it wasn't a particularly nice one and it needed money spending on it constantly and so it ended up sitting for months at a time while I scraped the money together to fix it and the insurance costs crippled me but at the time, all I thought was how good it was to have an RS Turbo at 18 when all my mates were driving run of the mill, normal cars. How very, very wrong I was! I wish I'd listened to my dad, mates, work colleagues etc instead of letting my heart rule my head.

I wish I'd stuck with the Orion and just saved my pennies up and bought an RS when I could have comfortably afforded it.

My advice is pretty much the same as the majority on here, buy something old and small (but cool ), cruise that about for 2 or 3 years while saving up some dough and building up your NCB and experience then buy something a bit tasty!

I was 23 when I bought my cossie, good things come to those who wait, believe me when I say the time will soon come around!
