Best idea, but a Puma already handles superbly. Lowered and decent alloys and money leftover from selling the Saph mate. Should see you right for a few years.

If i was you id get yourself a mk1 focus 1.6 zetec 3dr as they are a niice car for a young person,i had 1 when was younger and loved it,drop it -40mm,some nice 17"s and a bit of colour coding and it will be a proper nice ford for you.As for an RS Turbo you would have spend 4k+ for a non rot box and then there would be the maintainance which aint cheap, but that said i still love a sorted S2.
My old Focus..

And my Old RS..

As for the cossie you could always store it or as said sell to fund new motor, best of luck with what you decide mate.

If you want something that stands out as a standard car.

Get a mk1 fiesta. Lower it on some 4 spokes, job done.

Well said.

I can see why at 16 it looks 'cool' to have a crappy old cossie shell sitting in a garden but it really isnt.

Channel your energy into stuff you can enjoy.

I would get rid of it as well mate its going nowhere without ALOT of money and time sorry to burst your bubble but its pie in the sky , as above get a bit of money together trawl ebay and buy the likes of a decent little mk1 fiesta thats been a old lady's car garaged so your not battling with rust and plod away with it wheels , maybe xr2 arches etc , that way when you pass your test its a 1.1 fiesta & your away , dont mean to sound hard on you but i really think thats the liks of route you should take

You talk about selling the saph to buy something you can actually drive and enjoy....well an RS turbo won't be any good as you won't get insured!

It's clear you have great enthusiasm for the ford scene Lewis, but your aiming to high at the moment and you don't have funds to do it.

As has been said, sack off the sierra and get a mk1 fiesta, retro cool car which will give you plenty of fun! Drive that for a few years building up no claims and then look at getting an RS when your 21.

At your age you should be blasting around in a car with your mates picking up as much clunge as you possibly can, they are your best years! No birds will be interested in a rusty old sierra that you might have done in 8 years so get it sold!

Well it seems like you've made a decision from a practicality point of view that the Cossie thing is a non-goer.

But you obviously seem to like the whole Retro Performance Ford thing, hence having trouble letting go and thinking about RS Turbos.

Seems to me the most suitable solution all round is to get shot of the Saff and get yourself an XR3i or XR2i (which is much the better of the two cars).

Reason being is this:

- A pretty modest sum of money will get you an excellent example. This is something that can't be said of an RS model with a Turbo attached.

- Running costs, maintenance, insurance etc will all be much cheaper.

- You're still part of the same "scene" as you would be with the Cossie or RS Turbo.

- It will still be a "fun" car and pretty pokey for a new driver, even if not "fast".

- A good example will start no problem and not let you down. Less money spent on keeping it on the road, more time and money to spend on enjoying it and other things.

- It will still be an "old" car, so it's still wise to spend some time doing general maintenance and you can still do bits to improve it.

- This makes it easier for you to enjoy your first couple of years of driving with less headaches and still make a hobby out of it, then when, say, you turn 19 you can see how you feel then and look at your options. You could keep your car and get another project on the side and have the best of both worlds. You could keep your old Ford as a project/fun car itself and buy something more modern as a daily driver. You could sell your old Ford, buy a new project and a daily drive. Or by then you may have decided you don't want to be involved with that kind of thing at all and sell it to buy a newer car to do everything you want it to.

Your hands are tied with the Cossie. They will be tied, albeit perhaps to a lesser extent with an RS Turbo, but there are other options that can give you (almost) the best of both worlds.

Sell up and look for a mk3 escort.

Fresh paint and some nice wheels are all they need to look good IMO and they will be easy enough for you to work on.
Plenty of scope for future modding, whether it be a rsi or rst replica or you go the stripped out racer. There are almost endless engine possibilities with lots available from the scrappers for not a lot of cash.

Same can be applied to a mk4 escort,mk1/2/3 fiesta too really.

Stick with it lad!! I know its a fekin huge project but it CAN be done (and plenty of people on here are more than willing to help I'm sure), just find somewherr where you can keep it from damp, and save slowly. Do you have a little job? Even a copule of night a week, for a a few hours, plus maybe Saturdays, you could save togther a few quid (say you work 3 nights a week for 2 hours, plus 6 hours on a saturday, at your age you probs won't get more than £4 an hour, for now anyway, but that couls be £48 a week, plus maybe doing the odd detail on a sunday for a fiver), you could put aside £40 a week for it if you really wanted too. That'll soon get the ball rolling, just depends on how much you really want it.

Another idea is, (Probably gonna get flamed for this but...) Buy a cheap Mk4 Fiesta sort out a few bits (You seem handy with the spanners) get it MOT'd and sell it on and make a profit?

Do this maybe once a month while slowly increasing the purchase price and put the profits it your Sierra? (I'm sure your father/friend or someone would be willing to drive them home once it's not too far away?)

Concentrate on getting it rolling, Get it looking like a Cosworth then fire in a pinto or something cheap to get it moving and save up for the Cosworth engine then?

Agree with the mk4 fiesta, 1.4 zetec, nippy enough for a youngster to have fun in, plenty of bits available, dirt cheap to run, easy as fuck to work on. Its such a good idea, I'm wondering why I don't own one......

........ oh hang on, I do.

How about a 100e or 105e anglia? Great little cars and can be made to be nippy for cheap. Or keep the 1L sidevalve engine in it and just enjoy it

In a nutshell, yes.

I think by the time you pass your test insurance will be something like 6K+ on the cossie, and there or there abouts on a S2 Turbo too.

Which will mean unless you want to pass and not have a car you will need to buy something else as a stopgap for atleast 3-4 years to get no claims for the insurance to come to a reasonable price.

and in my opinion, if you got just say a tatty mk3 fiesta or the like and you are burning round in that with your friends at 17-18 then would you really have the motivation to carry on with the project?

Also, having a car on the road at my age (18) you have no money, and i mean NO money spare for parts and so on if you kept the project. Unless mommy and daddy have a generous hand obviously.

I think in the long run selling and forgetting about anything with an 'Rs' or 'Xr' badge would be wise.

As with anything though, your decision.

I know what you mean mate. I bought and insured a Mk1 Golf GTI for £1400 when I was 18. You'd pay twice that amount for insurance on 1.3 shopping box these days.

Lewis, if the car is in anyway preventing you get a useable car then sell it. If you're putting on hold a useable first car for a long slow project that takes away the best driving years you'll ever have, get it sold!

I'm sure most people on here will tell you some of their fondest driving memories were had in their first car. You're not going to get those same feelings looking back in 20yrs if you wasted 3 years sitting in an old sierra shell making Brum, Brum noises

Fuck it off. Seems a bit like your hung up on owning a cossie but in reality you don't. I don't mean that harshly at all.

At the end of the day you will probably spend as much building one up as you would buying one in 5/6 years. Fair enough you can say you built it but you will have wasted all your time on it when you could've been out getting pissed/laid.

I was lucky in a way that i had quick cars and still went out, but as Mat says, it's hard now with insurance and stuff.

I'd buy a mk1 fiesta and have a laugh with it like the others have suggested. Spend your time working hard, playing harder and get your ideal car in a few years.

I didn't realise you were only 16 - take this from my own experiences, forget about flash car's until you're earning proper money - concentrate more on your future whilst your young this is the most important thing you can and hunt for as much of that college minge as you can.
As for a car buy yourself a saxo 1.0L, yes they are shit but all you need is an A to B car - i know it's shit you want the cossies and RST's now but it ain't going to happen mate with no income.
I wasted loads of money on old Fords when i was young i'd say the best part of £25k, i had a gap and came back when i was 24 and bought a very tidy FRST and worked my way up.

Lewis at 16 your dreams are beyond you budget & common sense. You have a whole lifetime to create your dream car. Try spending your money on that short skirted blonde you see locally it will be much more fun than any RS at your age. Older model Ford RS are money pits & the bottom line is you cant compare them to a more modern performance cars. Put your petrolhead dreams on hold for a few years & live your life like others of your age . You have 50 years ahead of you to waste your money on old Fords.
