Would never reply to a text message asking about a car I had advertised under any circumstances.

Fair enough if its someone you'd spoken to on the phone or by e-mail prior to that, but if someone can't even be bothered to ring you or send you a half-decent e-mail then they're obviously an idiot who will only be interested in trying to get something for a rock bottom price.

I hate selling cars for reasons like this mate! The world is full of clowns!

I just broke this for parts, as I could not be bothered with the messers after just 2 weeks of trying to sell it whole!

If i get a text for anything i'm selling, i text back & ask them to call if genuinely interested when convenient, half the time they dont call

either that or simply write in your advert "PLEASE NO TEXTS, CALL IF INTERESTED" that helps to worm out the muppets

A used to never reply to text either as i always thought it was folk with free texts and if you cant afford a phone call you cant afford the car

but did start replying to a few folk and have sold a good few cars now with text , not even a single phone call , but don't get me wrong most of the time I just reply phone of interested as can't be arsed texting back

the simple problem is everyone wants something for nothing these days and in these tough times we want a fair price (or if youre a mong, top dollar) for our car so there is a clear gap.

The thing i dont get is people are too dumb fuck thick cunts these days to read the fucking advert.

You spend time putting as much info in the advert as possible and you still get some fucking spastic texting or ringing about "how many miles it got" or "how many owners" "when was it serviced" etc, all questions youd clearly answered in the advert.

One or two texts is fine as maybe they are at work or can't talk for some reason, but after that, they should call to discuss more.

Too many dreamers out there now looking at cars out of their price range and thinking they should be able to haggle them down. 9/10 times if you offered it them at the price the wanted, they would shat themselves and stilll not buy it.

I fucking hate selling cars!!

A few weeks ago I got a phonecall on my Golf:

Caller: I'm calling about the Golf you've got.
Me: ok, I've still got it.
Caller: How much are you after?
Me: Well it says on the advert £1200 so, £1200!!
Caller: I'll give you £700 innit.
Me: How can you have the cheek to make me an offer without even looking?!!
Caller: Well I only want it for the wheels innit.
Me: Well that's your problem mate, buy the car, swap over the wheels and sell it on again. Simple.
Caller: How about I come down, buy the wheels and then you can sell the car?
Me: What am I going to do a test drive on? Bricks?!!
Caller: so when can I come and get the wheels then and how much?
Me: whenever you like mate. I want £1200 for them.
Caller: you're having a laugh innit. I ain't paying that.
Me: They come with with a Golf GTI thrown in for free.
Caller: But I don't want the car innit.
Me: tough shit. If you want the wheels, buy the car. If you don't want to buy the car, then piss off!!

I then hung up.

I don't normally get that ratty with people but when they start wasting my time and take the piss, I get the hump!!

i had some wee wanker farmer come to buy a set of mim raffinos off me last year and he was told what the absolute lowest price was and not to bother meeting me if he intended offering less!!

met up, offered me £10 less and i wheeled them to the boot of the car and drove off leaving him standing!!

I love the dicks who want everything for nothing, but want a fortune for their items when selling!!

when im selling anything when i get a text i call the number back.

sometimes people text as they are at work and cannot be seen to be using phone
sometimes people are uncomfortable ringing strangers

i'd say 75% of the time i get through and they seem ok to deal with, the other 25% dont answer and i just ignore any further texts.

there have always been messers, its just 20 years ago before mobiles etc, they were known as tyre kickers....people haven't changed its just the communications have.

if you limit yourself to not responding to texts or emails you do limit your market unfortunately.

I had someone offer me half the money I advertised my Escort for. Very rarely do I get rude but I made a special occasion for that one.

You then get chancers, will you take my car which is worth half the price of yours in a straight swop... and most of the time, the car they are selling is harder to shift on that what I have.

The worst is when they say, yeah it is mint, every question you ask, yeah perfect, mint etc etc... You gt there and its a piece of shit.

When buying cars I ask all the questions over the phone, if they cannot answer them or give a bull shit reason etc I tend not to bother lookin at them. I broke this rule once for my M3 Convertible which was being sold in Birmingham by a dodgy garage, the car was a one owner car, full history, did all its miles in the first three years... Photos of it were crap, description was crap, guy on the phone constantly saying it is perfect etc... Went to look and it was far from perfect but a good car underneith. I ended up buying the car, had it for a year trouble free and sold on. Cleaned up lovely.

As for selling, if I cannot understand you, then I dont waste my time on you. Simple as that.

Also to add, I have recently sold a car abroad, and it went really well. Guy was genuine, spoke to him on the phone for a couple hours, loads of emails, everything he said he would do he did. He trusted me by putting the cash into my account through bacs. Really worked well, still keep in contact now regarding that car (M3 Convertible) Dont shy off the abroad ones guys, cars like M3's etc are cheap in the UK compared to these other countrys. I have had no issues with them...

Agreed.

I've sold to Ireland, Italy, Germany and an English guy in Australia and they've never been a problem.

Less chavs and timewasters abroad. And if people contact you from abroad then they're likely to be more serious.

had dozens of messers trying to sell my merc, decided to keep it to save the hassle, some twat expected me to drive it to Stratford so him and his brother could have a look over it (those that dont know Stratford isnt the nicest of places). What happened to making a phone call, arranging a time to view and coming over?!!

I recently sold my E90 BMW, had it up for £10k which was stupidly cheap for an m sport coupe, a foreign guy calls, asks what price is, I say 10k, he said can he come and view with the intention of driving it home if it was right, I said ok but dont bring a penny less than 10k if you do.... Comes over, views the car, tries 9k..... bye!!! Thankfully he did cough up the 10k in the end, took him an hour worth of trying to convince me, I left him on the drive at one point and I went in for a cuppa!

It's very similar selling parts to be honest. I try to give everyone a fair chance though, and some surprised me. You think "oh here we go, a day dreamer with no money" and they sometimes come up with the cash, so can't be too quick to judge

This might sound bad but I am being honest. I struggle to understand strong scottish accent and also Asians. When trying to judge a car from what they are telling you, and your struggling to understand puts a barrier up for me sadly. Bad I know but being honest. Although I have sold cars to Scottish and bought from Asian

I always text as sometimes its more convenient for me id hate to ring someone while they were busy, at work or disturb them aswell. Car I bought about 3 cars ago i text the guy just to ask if he had it and it carried on in text and he actually said i was the first guy who he had sold a car to through text message without being messed around.

It is true about the idiots that want something for nothing but whenever it comes to them selling something they want top whack price for it that nobody in their right mind would pay !

I always put in my adverts the price you win at in auction is the price you pay, you are welcome to come view first but if you win it means you turn up , pay and leave with the car, winning isnt an invitation to turn up, go over it with a fine toothcomb waste an hour of my time then offer me 2 - 300 less for what you won it at.

I tend to find if your a grumpy arrogant sod in your adverts it tends to keep the wasters away. It is also mainly asian origin men that waste time and try get cars for sod all especially when I lived near Leicester and sold a car when i was working in Birmingham. Soon as you hear innit bruv you know your times being wasted.
