Mini Cooper D 62plate discussion.

I own a super charged cooper S and have had many many minis at work. They are cracking cars. Your 62 plate example will have a BMW engine NOT PSA as they were replace through 2010 for their own considerably better unit.
They are not that comfortable on ride, often due to run flat tyres, (bin them off) not practical but they are properly fun to drive and unlike many cars, the polo particularly these do still have some character. Don't expect it to be particularly well built though. Rattles are part and parcel.
I will say that although not the fastest on the straight, through the bends you can easily see off some much heavier machinery.
People that bitch and moan about them usually haven't driven one, much like the MX5, proper drivers cars.
People that think that guys would like a 'sausage muncher' driving one probably says more about them then the car. I don't need to drive a v8 turbo powered rwd to know I'm a man and I'm comfortable with the size of my penis...
If you want a fun and frugal 2+2 take one for a drive and ignore people that haven't driven one. The petrol models are a better overall experience though...
For me the best small diesel is a Golf GTD but I'm sure higher on tax.

To the op
Do you do lots of miles per year? If not then your not going to find it cheaper to run a diesel over a petrol. Plus does mini have a dpf? If it does again you have to be doing the miles to make the dpf regenerate.
If your only doing average mileage per year and mainly short distances you may s well get a small engined .petrol powered car with decent mpg return.
My current daily drive is a seat Leon 1.4TSI sport. 1.4 turbo petrol .lump returns high 30's/low 40's on the daily commute to work. The most I've had out of it is 57mpg on the motorway.
You could get a seat ibiza 1.4 or vw polo with the same engine - if your after a small run about or even an audi a1.
Same engine is also used in the golf, A3, and the skoda range.
And you won't have anyone questioning your sexuality

Whats funny have you driven one ? they are quicker than the petrol's apart from cooper s , they do good mpg as well . the new cooper s d is near 200 bhp its a bmw engine not the french engine that the older one used same engine in the fiesta tdci's etc ,
They handle great and do good mpg , take the blinkers off

i did wonder
bmw would have been making a big song and dance about slotting such a huge powerplant into a "small" car
still don't like them though, i think they look shite

i just went to tesco in teh mini beign dark and no wife i gave it the boot constantly
5mmiles of country side 60 limit and 5 miles of a road
and it did go very well, had it sideways round a roundabout (yes i know its fwd )
and it is rewarding and overtakes really well under 60mph
but my arms ached on return
it was skitting all over the place and when i jumped on the brakes a few times really hard it did seem to want to swap ends
feels to me alot like a mk2 xr2, goes where you want it but still not a car to travel far in
also we wide if seeing ave 47mpg (she gets 43 average in her 1.6 petrol scenic so you can imagine how she drives) i didnt know where the button was to see what i got, i was cold too and couldnt see where to turn the heater to what i wanted so just hit 'max'
and how do i turn the fookin stereo off? wifes crap music thing was on so just turned the volume down
it goes back tuesda

good thing you wern't given a bmw with the idrive thing, i was a passenger and couldn't figure out half the stuff, so you can imagine what it would have been like for a driver (which is probably why they all drive around like clods )

the arse end comes out driving steadily round a gentle bend!
