I've had a ford cougar but the central locking isn't working. My key has 3 buttons on It.

When I press the lock button on the key, nothing happens, if I lock the door with the key only that door locks still no central locking, if I press the boot open button on the dash, nothing, but I can open the boot with the key ok.

As nothing works I'm assuming it may be a fuse, but in my manual it doesn't say which fuse is for the central locking. Also, at a glance, my fuses look ok.

Is this a common problem with a nice quick fix or a bigger problem?

Any help would be fantastic,

I've got these instructions incase anyone else needs this info

Remote Transmitter Programming - vehicles with radio frequency keyless entry

Focus 1999, Cougar 1999, Fiesta 1996, Mondeo 1997 and Puma 1998 only

NOTE: A maximum of four remote transmitters can be programmed to the vehicle. Programming must be done at the same time for all the remote transmitters. NOTE: Before entering the remote transmitter programming mode, make sure that the vehicle battery is fully charged and that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (if equipped). 1. Close all doors to make sure conflicting chimes do not sound during programming.

2. Turn the ignition switch from position I to position II four times within six seconds.

3. Turn the ignition switch to position 0.

4. A chime sounds and an LED in the instrument panel will illuminate to indicate that the learning mode has been accessed and it is possible to program remote transmitters.

5. Within 10 seconds of the previous step, press any button on the remote transmitter being programmed until a chime is heard and the LED flashes. This indicates a new transmitter code has been successfully received.

6. After each successful remote transmitter programming, another 10 second learning mode is automatically entered, up to a maximum of four times.

7. To program additional remote transmitters, repeat step 5.

8. The system will exit the learning mode if the ignition switch is turned to position III, no new remote transmitter is programmed during the 10 seconds or if four remote transmitters have been programmed.

9. NOTE: An incorrect programming procedure does not affect the stored codes.

After successful programming, only the new programmed remote transmitters will be accepted.

10. Test all the programmed remote transmitters, by activating and deactivating the remote locking and unlocking functions.

I'm going to try this later on, I will post if this works or not.

I've tried the above, it didn't work, so I've unplugged the module and plugged it back in, trying to reset it, that didn't work, so I've bought a new module off eBay for 20 quid. Hopefully, that'll fix it.

If central locking isn't working with the key in the lock I'd be looking elsewhere there's an Ecu type thing for it and there is a fuse. If you're unsure which fuse do it my way and pull each fuse one by one and see which is blown

I'll help as much as I can as I have the mondeo v6 st so ill keep my eye on this thread all the best

Bought a new module, fitted it today, but the central locking won't cycle still from the door lock, didn't bother try pair up the key. Car will still start. I've checked my fuses, all are ok.

Any one know what else it could be?

It'll almost certainly be the actual central locking mechanism in the driver's door if the key doesn't activate all the locks. I presume it's the same as the ones in the Mondeo. If so, get one from eBay and all will be good!

Something else I've noticed,

The light on the dash to the left of the traction control switch is dimly lit all the time and flashes a bit brighter. When I unplugg the central locking module this light flashes normally and its not dimly lit.

Does this suggest a specific fault somewhere?

sounds tho a slight short on system if dash light as you say. most likely in door solenoid.(same as mk 2 mondys). try dowsing the lock mechanism and solenoid in wd 40 .

If its the door solenoid and I have to change it, is the lock easy to change?

I hate having 2 different keys for a car.

Is the solenoid and the lock the same part ?

Stop being crazy, look for a solution first before buying more parts...

The solenoid is separate on most there is a few on the bench at st3 odd ones but also in my box is a multimeter borrow that if needs be or what you up to Monday ? I'm off but have an assignment due so trying not to be in the garage all unit all week

It is separate from the lock so easy to change 3 screw in the door jam, but there is plenty of spare plates to build a lock to the key if needed.

As for the key does the remote key work ? Does it trigger in learning mode at all ? Key shop in Longton have a programmer so he would be able to see if it's transmitting or it just needs a battery possibly cheaper than changing half the pats system.

The central locking solonoids look to be Mondeo fitment havent been to Tim at mcguiness for a while but they had a few last time up.
