I think if its been out of tax and mot for more than 12 months, and hasnt been put on retention...you will have to get your car road legal again to transfer the plate. If the car is beyond that.....your plate is gone!

I have lost a plate because of this

As said can't be done with no MOT,, it sucks arse more if your mate took the engine, box and loom out of car then decided he's bored and you get told that dvla wish to inspect a complete car and the car has tax and test !!!

Or find another mot station that might give you a certificate without the car being there?
Maybe explain the situation some may do it, most probably won't.

If your car is road legal get it put on a retention before tax runs out, i have 2 other cars with great yearless reg numbers out of mot/tax which are unuseable and worth a good few quid too

If you follow the letter of the rulebook you're stuffed. I wrote a letter to the DVLA on behalf of a friend who wanted the plate off their Subaru (stood for 2 years with no engine). DVLA kindly transferred the plate with no fuss at all.

DVLA do something usefull, that's a first

If the DVA wound their fucking necks in and let people cherish transfer plates on cars long gone - as long as the client could prove say 3yrs+ of ownership or a continuous SORN from the named person on the tax book, just think of the revenue then would get on cherished transfers. If a plate means that much to someone, they would be getting Ł80 a time, when 1 single person kept a particular plate and kept transferring it to every car they own. And if 100 people where to do that...that is them gaining Ł8000 for using 100 A3 sheets of paper and whatever amount of ink they bought from Tescos FFS!!!

It would also cut out on unwanted admin as in registering "temporary, newly" issued numbers, that would disappear whenever a transfer would be down for a 2nd time on a vehicle for example!!!

^^ your not wrong as I have a 1956 MG magnett (ex police car) handed down to me through the family with a great reg, its not been on the road since the early 80s and needs a top to tail restore which would set me back 6k, I have the new style V5 for it and everything, but unless its road legal I cant touch it and the reg is worth you guessed it Ł6k , its been in my name for nearly 30 years too

Its common knowledge that vehicles are getting put through dodgy mots to get plates alive again!!

And when the DVA finally pass this thing about cars registered before 1960-something (remember an article in national newspapers) being "MOT EXEMPT".....wait til you see the amount of pre 1970s plates that are suddenly in circulation again!!

Do the DVLA always want to inspect the car on a reg transfer?

If its been on a SORN for a number of years then appears out of nowhere, they might request to view it.

Not always but they "reserve" the right to call a vehicle for inspection

Not necessarily depending on who you know. Lets just say I got a plate back recently and the car hadnt been on the rd for 6 years.

However as per above, someone else on this site wrote to the DVLA explaining that the plate was stuck on a car with a snappet timing belt/chain and it was an uneconomical repair. They gave the plate back ont he understanding that the car was scrapped.

SO dont give up hope yet.

Thats pure luck on your friends behalf. I told the DVA the same thing (uneconomical repair) about the plate i had and they told me there was nothing that could be done. Either lose the plate or repair and road legalise the car again.

Wish i had of done a back door mot fuck sake
