Default rev counter issue

ive installed a rev counter into the ka and connected it up to the 1.8 16v xr3i lump , but when ever the engine is running it goes hay wire .

ive got it wired from both end cables of the coil and there connected to the correct diodes and to the signal wire so i no the wiring is correct.

my query is , i just remembered that the rev counter was a classic mini specific after market unit and ive read some where that it will not work correctly with other types of coil is this true??

if so shall i just bin it ang get a normal aftermarket rev counter??

ive seen on some websites selling after market rev counters that they are not compatable with classic minis . . .

any one shed any light on this??
