Default Ford Focus loud roaring noise from rear of car.

Hi Guys,
I'm getting a loud roaring noise coming from the back of my car unless turning right and stationary, I initially thought it was my exhaust back box and centre silencer as they were bought on the cheap. (you get what you pay for) So I today put on a brand new set up, Walker Exhaust back box and centre silencer but it hasn't resolved the problem.

Could anyone give any further advice as to what it could be?? Wheel bearing on the right possibly?

With it falling silent when turning right would it indicate the bearing on the right with all the weight being on the left.

No - left wheel tries to pull itself off the car when you turn left but load is pushing into the car / bearing when turning right.

If it's that bad, jack the car up and try to rock the wheels whilst holding at top and bottom. The one that wobbles is the one with the knackered bearing!

Easiest way to check the bearing then is too rock the wheel (whilst it's jacked up) on each axis. There will be noticable play if it's the bearing. From your description I'd say it is, get it check by your local mechanic if in any doubt.

a wheel bearing can still be faulty with no play in it. You need to spin the wheels and listen for roughness. Support the car safely with the wheels clear of the ground and the handbrake off. Hand brake off also applies to checking for play.

Other way round surely? If the noise stops when turning right, that suggests it is the right hand side wheel bearing, as the noise stops when the weight comes off it.

I think my next job will be to change the wheel bearing. Quick easy job, is it with doing both sides?

if its that loud it could soon collapse. happened on my old mk5 escort

heard a rumbling noise, so turned around for home about 2 miles later the bearing race collapsed. had to drive home at about 5mph that was quite painful lol

also when torquing to 235nm i lifted the car off the axle stands lol

bearings are about Ł25 a side, well they were when i last done it.

easy enough to do to. use the old bearing to tap the new one home

That's the reason I'm thinking it's not the wheel bearing as its been roaring for a few months and surly if it was knackered it would of collapsed by now especially on a long drive to Cornwall in may. (370 miles)

get it done then. Had one collapse on my wife's mk6 fiesta, locked the rear wheel up! Luckily she was going slowly and had little warning of it about to go.

I fully appreciate the comments, could well be the wheel bearing. But the bearing on the right was only done 3-4 months ago.

What does tyre roar sound like, would it give a similiar sound to a wheel bearing? Or would wheel tracking being out cause a similiar sound?

Just had ATS look at it, definately Wheel bearing. Sounds like a stupid question but would a 1998 focus have Abs as standard.

Is there any thing I can look for on the car that'll determine if it has abs. I've priced up a bearing from my local motor factors and there's the none abs or with abs.

Default Bearing prices advice.

Turns out it's a wheel bearing that's knackered on the rear o/s. But don't know who to trust for replacement part.

Got 3 different quotes.

Motor Factor - Ł36, Asked me if the car had ABS
Parts Specialist #1 - Ł20, When I asked if the Bearing was for a vehicle with ABS I was told according to their parts list/system there's only one option for rear bearings, but With ABS or None ABS on any front wheel bearings........ Is this true.
Parts Specialist #2 - Ł18, Also asked if the bearing was for a Car with ABS and was told Yes.

What would be my best option. Go with the most expensive part or can I trust the Specialist #1 or #2

Have you got access to a press for fitting the bearing?

When I've had them wear out it's tended to be shown up by the lateral force rather than the weight being on that wheel. Just my experience so far.

Cos I refuse to pay the price they quoted just cos they are a leading name on the high street. Think I'm going to book it into my local garage. Ł60 fitted which seems reasonable.

always buy quality wheel bearings or OE ones as the cheapo ones wear out mega fast, also any good motor factors will ask you for your number plate or vin so they can match up the exact one needed, only 2 bob shops ask you if its abs or not

Yeh all 3 did ask for the registration, sorry should of included. It just worried slightly that only the motor factor asked if it was ABS or not. Do you actually need to a press to put the new bearing in. My brother has fitted many bearings on his previous cars (not the same car over and over) without the use of a press.

There are 2 different types of bearings, taper bearings like this, which don't need a press,

and a press fit bearing like this, which is what you have.

Best bet is to get someone with a press to do it as they can be an absolute pan to get in and out and they need to be fitted dead square as you can knacker the earing easily if it gets whacked in slightly out of line.

Thank you for the advice, I'm going to book it in to the garage next week and get the work done professionally, I'm pee'd off that the garage I asked to do it a few months ago have either failed to it properly or just haven't bothered at all.

Hi guys, just been out briefly in the car and as I was driving I felt the car suddenly seem as if I'd hit the brakes for a split second, and it did this a couple of times. Is this a sign of the bearing collapsing??? Or a new problem?
