Default WHo's got an Oppliger gearkit in a 4x4 cossie?

Decided I am going for this after doing a fair bit of research on the boxes available for uprated 4x4's.
So, having done a bit of dredging through Google and what not I can only find two old testimonies about people using this box and not a great deal of feedback from them since, which I hope is a good thing, usually if they had broken you'd hear about it, right?

Anyway, I had read that MAD were trialling one and that AG had an earlier box that was sold to either Mike R or one of his buddies that had a transfer chain iussue but that the actual gearkit was fine and all was fixed and running good, these were from beginning 2011, and relatively early in useage, so I wondered what has happened since then and who else is using one.

It seems to not only be the best box for the money, but actually one of the better boxes compared to some of the other kits out there.

Thoughts please.

Pretty sure Mark Shead rated them, he had two cars using them with circa 600 bhp iirc

I've got this one in my kitchen waiting for fitting

Best value for money gear kit out there imo, what you have to remember though with any 4x4 big tooth kit you still have to drive the car with a certain amount of care and respect, does not matter what kit you have if you drive it like a complete loon it WILL break

and before any of the 2wd poofs come on the thread and give it large you lot eat rear diffs like milk chocolate digestives too

Thanks for the responses, tbh i wouldn't care if it was straight cut or not, as long as it doesn't break easily. Having read about offerings from Quaife/Bara/R&D/Fixit none of them inspire me with a great deal of confidence and each seem to have their own pitfalls, so I'm opting for the Oppliger kit which seems to be a good all round kit.

Do the other boxes have a spacer/strengethening plate?

Afternoon chaps,

I bought AG's Oppliger box through Mike Rainbird for my saff a good 2-3 years ago. Done around 6k miles with it in so far, and so far had no issues what so ever. Please bear in mind that my saff is only around 370bhp at the moment, doesn't go on track, and doesn't get launched, so isn't really the best example to go by.

My box is noisey, coupled with a straight through exhaust, vibrotechnic engine mounts, and no radio will get on your tits after a couple of hundred miles, but in built up areas sound the tits imo! Apparantly a Mk2 box is now out, and has replaced the early ones like mine, and are meant to be much quieter.

It does however scare old ladies and small childeren when it winds up through the gears. Not sure if that's a good thing or not?

All said and done, I am personally very happy with it, and along with the front diff plate I bought off Reyland, am ready for more horses, whilst being safe in the knowledge my transmission won't explode. Just waiting for the head gasket or turbo or something to go as an excuse to the mrs to uprate!

Hope that helps mate.

No good 2wd boys always give the 4x4 boys a hard time about the transmission, so I always give a banter dig back about 2wd's not being as bullet proof as everyone likes to think

I've always quite liked the whine of a straight cut box...

True, I'm hoping with the oppliger kit I can go a bit mental with it, I wasn't even trying when I broke the last box. I have a plan for the diffs but the box is my immediate concern, so if Oppliger decide to return my email I might be in danger of getting it sorted this year.
I like noisey boxes, the Bastos escos at Croft has an R&D box in it and sounded ace but I haven't read encouraging things about them , and for the cost it's definately not a good idea.

The main advantage of this kit, other than the strength of the straight gears is that the standard 4x4 gearbox ratio's have been done away with in favour of closer ratio's......... this is more in line with typical performance car gear ratio's as for unknown reasons Ford originally gave the 4x4 Cosworth the same ratio's as the Ford Granada which was a big old barge of a car which had spaced out ratio's for a relaxed drive Not what you want in your Escort Cosworth

When i first drove the car with the new box, the ratio's immidiately made sense as the cars progress is much better and doesn't drop so many revs on the change........... which the turbo is very happy about

I can forward on any technical questions for Pete from anyone interested in the kit or you can contact him direct on 01159-271985.

ps. Although this is a Synchromesh gearbox, there may be an interesting upgrade development for it in the future  but no promises on that as these things take time ........ this Kit is already nearly a year past it's original due date

Price for kit is £2950 +vat
Having Pete build kit into your box is £250 labour + any seals or bearings found to be necessary
Pete's new gearbox is the only option I would chose and in UK also in case of problems

Speak to Italie Cossie on here, he make them.
This is what i got from him,
hello,
the kit has 1000km with new sinchro kit, is heli cut 12 degree and is with big tooth gears and you put the spacer between the two cases and a small spacer on the front propshaft. The gear ratios on my sierra with standard diff ratios 3.62 and wheels 235/40/17 was in km/h:
1st 70.24km/h
2nd 104.km/h
3rd 166.km/h
4th 191.km/h
5th 248.km/h

the kit is really strong and can resist for engines 600bhp +
the price of it complete ready to fit is 1800gbp + postage. I accept paypal as method of payment and for shipment price you have to give me your full adress to take a quote from the courier. You can also send your courier to pick it up no problem for me or i can bring it to a deposit if they have here near Florence where i'm located.

All well and good that these kits can cope with x amount of BHP but its the lb/ft of an engine that breaks gearboxes or am i wrong?

Thats right, and also if you have low down torque, it`s more stress to driveline

Correct but it is unlikely that anyone would have a big HP engine with low torque. BHP figures seem to be the accepted unit of measurement when it comes to this kind of stuff.
