Default How many rows needed on an oil cooler?...

ive got a day off work so my friend's had me researching all day but i cant seem to find the info that i require. hoping someone on here can help

my friend has a 200bhp ep82 toyota starlet gt, he's going to be using it mostly as a track car. he took the car on track at lydden hill at the bhp show but had to back off and even pull off the track due to oil temp and pressure issues. now those sessions were only 15 minutes long so he definitely needs an oil cooler

anyway the questons is, does it matter what size oil cooler he has? obviously the larger the size the greater the cooling and oil capacity, and i doubt the application requires a massive 19+ row cooler. just that although the car is only a turbocharged 1.3 im assuming the engine works incredibly hard (harder than most anyway) to make its power, so a greater sized cooler would be a must

any help appreciated

thanksin advance

19 row may be over-kill and engine may not warm up quick enough - 19 row are recommended for V8s!!! , I use a 13 row on my 210hp VR6 Golf track day car.

Rally design or Think Automotive for a Mocal kit.

i run a 16 row mocal on my xr2, you can't really go too big, just fit a thermostatic sandwich plate instead of a regular one.

Thanks for the replies people. I think he's settling for a 13 row cooler and I think he's going to try and get away with not getting a thermostatic plate, much to my dismay.

i had a 19 row on my escort rst , fun to fit... but it did have a thermo plate, worked like a dream too. oil temps were a huge drop from the issue ones before.
