I'd go for the E39 personally as I've never really liked the E46's.

3 series if you are after a bit more fun and power, 5 series if your intention is to cruise motorways all day long. Either way, a nice engine!

I have a 55 330cd msport auto would rather it over a 5series. But then I'm 21 so can't see myself in a 5series.

Having had a 530d Sport with a manual box I would say the E39 all day long

Driven plenty of E46 330d/320d Sport/SE with manual and auto boxes and they are simply not as well put together as an E39

cheers for the comments people

ive driven quite a few e46 330d's, e60 530 and 535d's, e90 330 and 335d's, petrol e39's but never an e39 530d... i take it they go as well as an e46 330d? i do like the look of them more too. i would love a remapped one too, but ive been told to replace the auto box actuators before i do this? anyone had problems?

Or just buy a manual E39 530D and get it remapped..........Plus with the manual you dont have to worry about the dreaded swirl flap issues...

3 and 5 series both very good at what they do, but they do different things.

family of 5? you need a 5 series
21 years old and no babies? you probbaly prefer a 3

i have an auto 530d and i'd SOOO much rather have a manual, i couldnt find many manually 530ds when i was looking tho, autos definately far more common. car i bought ticked EVERY box except the gearbox, so i just lumped it.
