Question 55d van engine conversion

ok im looking to bin the engine out of my van its done 166000 hard miles and has nothing left . looking to swap to petrol as derv price drives me nutts prefer a 1.6 turbo if possible .but will be tempted by a tdci looking for a but under the peddle but still economical when plodding about im mainly a 60mph motorway plodder as thats all me van will do just need pulling power with same if not better economy .

my van is mk6 55d 1.8 escort on a 51 with 5 speed manual(non turbo obv)

what engines would bolt straight on a list would be awesome for when im hunting around

I've turbo'd my van ages ago and carried out a normal Zetec conversion and they have both been fun but with a turbo you start wanting more power tho

60 mph on a motorway? So you're one of the people clogging up the inside lane on motorways?

My old non turbo 1.8 Escort van would still run at 85 mph on the flat with a run up, and easily cruise at 70 mph.

I fitted a 1.8 intercooled TD lump from an Escort car, and it's transformed it. Will do 100 mph on the sat nav, and comfortably cruise at 85.

Just got back from a 235 mile holding 85 mph on the sat nav (93 + on the van speedo), and it managed it all at 38mpg Cheap, quick enough, and I hear they run on veg oil and other oily ish products just as well

If you get a whole car as a donor like I did, the swap is very easy.

ive had a few escort 55s and 75s and my last was a 51 plate derv. My advice would be to drop in a mondeo td and run it on WVO (veg oil). I used to put 25 litres veg to every 5 of normal diesel. Contrary to popular belief the lucas pump is fine with veg oil as long as a suitable thinner is used hence the 5 litres of normal diesel. never had any issues, just made sure fuel pump was changed slightly more regular than recommended. Went better too

Whats wrong with that? I quite happily cruise at 60mph most the time? Do you shout at lorries because they clog up the inside lane aswell?
Why should I cruise at 70 and do 45mpg when I do nearly 60mpg at 55-60mph?

To the OP...

I've been thinking about this for quite a while.

If you were to get a TDDi 1.8 out of a focus with the Bosch VP pump they have them you probably could fit a fully mechanical Bosch VE Pump off a 306 DTurbo etc using the TDDi pully and injectors.

But I'm still not 100% sure about it.

All depends on what you want and how much you wanna spend, I played with my one n/a diesel it had a kn on it, I up'd the fuel pressure a bit checked the slack on the throttle cable and had a more free flowing exhaust on it, it went well and sounded nice i lowered ut and ur made it feel alot faster than i was going lol, I've always played about with turbo and ended up buying a fiesta turbo and swapped everything over which I haven't looked back at

Fair enough, you must have a proper crock of an engine though, as my original 1.8 n/a engine would still manage 70 cruising, and as said with enough time you could wind it round to 85 ish!

What's wrong with it is I'm a trucker, stuck on a limiter at 56 mph and there's nothing quite as irratating as a cnut driving a car or van capable of more speed at the same sort of speed as us. Usually doing 55 mph, as soon as a truck goes to over take the same cnut usually then snaps out of their fookin trance and zooms off at 60 mph or more.

Not saying the OP is one of those, but believe me there are hundreds of such bell ends out there. Driving a truck that holds up the traffic is bad enough, but then coming up behind a car or van holding the trucks up boils my piss big time

No doubt you would be the first person to start getting all as I pull into "your" middle lane to over take said slow moving cnut.

I guess for many people due to the intentional inaccuracy of speedos, meaning generally you're going slower than your speedo says, someone doing 60 mph on a motorway, is probably sitting right at a trucks real 55/56 mph, getting right in the twatting way.

Hope that covers it, but if not let me sum up:

Get a fucking move on, stop inconveniencing others to suit yourself

That's mainly aimed at the fucktards getting in the way on the inside lane which neither you nor the OP may actually be - sit at a real 60 mph + then ok, anything less and you should feel the wrath of the middle and outside lane drivers who moan at trucks for overtaking stuff at 56mph getting in their way.

Used to have a cvh but it's now got a Zetec turbo in it, was. A bad conversion as I'm a mechanic and done most of the conversion myself I only had the diesel tank cut open and a swirlpot fitted and a rs2000 sender ring fitted as the diesel ones are too small

lol at the above .....i sit at 60 because of noise from tappets and iv blown 3 of the endura 1.8's in a mark 5 55d .
and fuel economy goes out the window above 70..
but saying that iv fitted a new tank and pump and sender unit which isno easy task might i add and tank straps as i got annoyed lol hence also the hole in the floor in the back from the gas torch

im defo a bit quicker . sitting at 65 now so i might even chance chasing Si B and going for a overtake down hill

but im going to stick with a derv hence the tank change but defo go turbo

i want the newest engine possible to fit the gear box thats good on derv and can pull it and a trailer or dare i say it c***van
