Default so you think tuners are charging too much?

right before you read this i'm not having a go at anyone mentioned below..........

as a few people might know i have moved house and with the sale of the old house going through i thought it was time i cleared the loft in the old place.. (one job less to do etc). i must have at least a couple of thousand mags and at least a thousand car brochures . i have kept all my old brochures (sad i know!) and binned most of the mags with the exception of all 'redline' (as i know dan) and some others. i was reading an old 'top car' mag from march 1991 and found an old turbo systems full page add, here are some of the prices quoted
monster cosworth conv 440hp 10k plus vat,
rs500 440hp 9k plus vat,
ultimate 500+ hp poa (if you hve to ask!),
so you see 14 years on it's got cheaper!

Yes but it's like electrical equipment, tellys video etc the development of the products needs to be payed for first then the cost can come down, I remember my dad paying Ł550 for an akai video in around 1985 a better video can be got now for 80 quid!!

Actually Turbosystems has always been expensive

For 650 HP according to his website he charges Ł39,000+VAT of which some of that Horsepower has to obtained through NOS

And for 450HP hes still charging what he did in 91 so no its not a case of tuners getting cheaper

Ermmm, I have been quoted 9.5K for a standard engine rebuild Martin, and that was 18 months ago.... so prices may have gone down in general, but some still charge a lot

Jees....
Ive just quoted Dave EscCos for exactly that, a 400bhp capable engine.... It was over 6K less than that and included VAT!!

However it was engine build only and to be fair some folks quote gearboxes and brakes etc in with their conversion costs

Id say in general costs have dropped dramatically in the YB game, but tuning in general will always be an expensive game in the uk due to teh relatively small target audience we all have. Its teh same in any bespoke industry, the less potential customers there are, the more each item must cost to sustain its vendors.

Fook me, that's an expensive hobby.
The way I see it then, instead of looking for mint standard examples to tune, buy 'em already at stage 3 and you'll save yourself a packet.

That TS engine will include bits like a T4 turbo etc as well remember. And he always said that he sold a complete package so maybe includes diff, i/c etc etc.

Remember he had touring cars running back in the day, imagine going to Prodrive etc for a one off these days

I have to say as a customer or Tony's he may be fooking expensive but 'from my experience' he's always given amazing service.

You also get free life tips, last time I went to see him he told my GF she'll go mad one day.

Thing is, like Phil points out, a 400bhp conversion could be a 400bhp engine or it could be a car designed to perform as a 400bhp car should. It's a bit like saying Mc Donalds are cheaper than Burger King or Matalan Cheaper then Next, you need to know what you are getting for your doller.

its juat lie everything else in this world , there are people who overcharge , there are people who say 'you get what you pay for' , there are people who are friends of someone 'who can'

all are good because it keeps people in there respective jobs having the choice of who to use

does that make sence ?

Why mention Tony at all then if it could be "anyone" knowing how it is on here i would of just mentioned the prices without naming names, its not important who was charging what in 91 just a recap as to how much things were back then would of done
why not mention him?, it was his add! if i had not mentioned who it was then people would have asked anyway. all i was saying is look at how much tuning cost 14 years ago.
