Most cars use the Inductive pickup, or variable reluctance sensor as standard these days as they are very cheap to produce. They are not powered and generate an AC voltage where the frequency and amplitude increases with RPM. They are susceptible to noise and need to be well shielded with good signal conditioning in the ECU. Cossie, Zetecs etc etc all use this type.

Hall effect are an active sensor, i.e. is powered usually by a 5v signal. These return a nice 5v square wave to the ECU, frequency increases with RPM. Given a choice starting from scratch I would use the Hall Effect.

Little difference between them in terms of performance. A lot will depend on what your ecu prefers though. Some may be able to decode/filter some better than others.

Although as Rick says, 2 wire Mag sensors are more susceptible to noise, simple solution to that is dont fuck the wiring up.
