Default Running lean

We've had a rolling road session today and have been told that the Zetec in our 100e is running too lean. We took it from a 130HP escort SI and fitted everything complete with ECU, loom etc. It showed 88 HP on the dyno. This was a tad dissapointing but how can it be lean when we haven't altered it, How do we 'fatten' it up and where has it lost the other few horses?
We also fitted a superchip whilst there and this made a miniscule difference, why?

That doesnt mean either there is an installation problem, or some other fault.

So you say they were lean....so what exactly were the mixtures ?

It's a bit pointless trying shittychips etc without actually trying to diagnose whether there is a fault or not first.

Is the engine healthy ? What exactly were mixtures ? is fuel pressure ok ? Intake/exhaust in good order, is ignition timing correct ?

The only alterations to the original escort setup is that it now runs a bosch 12 bar fuel pump and has a 4 branch exhaust manifold from Burtons.
The real issue here is, How do I alter the fueling?

sometimes when people say things are too lean, what they actually mean is that it isn't rich enough for best torque.

i think you need to go back to the rolling road and find out if there timing has dropped out possibly, fuelling will make a difference, but what if the ecu isn't sending the right signals to the edis unit?
that could be a problem too and would affect the AFR readings also.

No such thing as a 12 bar pump

Irrelevant anyway. The real issue is getting some facts to try and determine if there is a fault that needs fixing instead of fucking about

Oh!!! I'm trying to sort it but as I've never dealt with all these electronics I'm not sure how things are altered. I'm use to a big yank motor and 'kin great carbs!!!

Your posts suggest you simply want to try and add more fuel rather than discovering if there is an actual problem though.

I don't understand where the problem could be. What would make it run lean. I didn't think the ignition timing could be altered. As I said before I have never dealt with ECU's and all the electronics. I was lead to believe that the ECU would remap itself to suit it's needs.

You appear to have a bee in your bonnet about something here. I am only asking for advice. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as they do on other sites I am on rather than slate me because I'm not sure with all this electronic shit. If you don't want to help then keep your arsey comments to yourself. I have been building race cars and engines for a long time but have never dealt with Ford or ecu's. Sorry to have been a bother to you. I'll not ask for any more advice on this forum.

If you've taken everything from the Escort exactly and now its running "lean" then whats to say it wasnt running "lean" when it was in the Escort???

You need to diagnose the problem first

That is exactly what I'm trying to do. How do I diagnose it though?

Well you said you've installed a new fuel pump so that shouldnt be the issue.

.

Try checking the pressure on the rail, there should be a shrader type valve that you can check the pressure from with the right equipment.

If the pressure is reaching the rail ok then next port of call is injectors.

Fuel Pressure Regulators can give problems also

Once you've eliminated any mechanical fueling issues then its on to the electronics and Im not much use on them either to be honest

Are the fuel pipes from the tank to the engine the 100e ones or the zetec ones? ie are they big enough?

Calm down guys... the info is in the thread here and, whilst stevie is indeed being a little blunt in his delivery, the information he is giving / asking for is indeed totally correct.

Before you can progress here, you NEED to know where its lean, and by how much, you simply cannot proceed without this information.

Deleting posts highlighting vital questions he has completely ignored which must be answered to try and diagnose the problem. That's very helpful to the OP.

Good luck.
