Default Sierra hatch Tailgates - are mk1 and mk2 tailgates the same?

Are they the same, as i have a mk1 sierra 3dr and also have a 5dr mk2 hatchback and was wondering if the tailgates are exactly the same - they look to me but i have not had them side by side to compare as they are different locations.

Cheers

They're not exactly the same, I'm sure lock and latch areas differ for one.

Cheers Martin, but can u swap the locks and latches over?

Apart from the above, are the actual tailgates identical?

Not sure about the mk1 to mk2 swap but there are two types of mk2 tailgate.

The early mk2 (up to 1990 IIRC) had a different wire grommet position on the right hand side compared to the later ones.

This requires a new hole to be drilled in the bodywork if you are replacing the earlier one with one from a newer car.

The glass is bigger on a Mk2 so the metal frame is narrower. That means that if you are fitting an XR4i or Cosworth upper spoiler to a Mk2 tailgate, they will overlap the screen just a little.

The holes in the top for wiring and washer fluid are different, as are the wiring looms inside the tailgate.

Mk1 doesn't have a mounting hole for the radio aerial amplifier.

Lock and catch can be swapped over.

Mk1 hinges are welded to the tailgate. On a Mk2 they bolt on. So long as you have the Mk2 hinges they are a straight swap.
