Default brake problem

thought id ask your opinions on what could be wrong with the brakes (abs/traction) on my puma as the abs/traction lights came on the dash on friday and the brakes seemed fine worked no problem, but today the lights went off and i had a couple of problems when i was on the way to the beach, when i was braking just as you came to a stop it sounded like it was grinding and a vibration in the brake pedal and a strange whining noise when i pulled away and it did it a couple of times all with no lights on the dash.
then on the way home the lights came back on and drove home with no problems until the lights went off again half a mile from home and as above happened again, any ideas what it could be guys
ps, had the wheels off and checked the brakes and nothing looks wrong at all but im no expert..

Faulty sensor? I had a similar problem on my lorry at work a few years back. ABS light would be on - brakes no problem. First start up after break - no ABS light on. First stop after this and abs would kick in on a completely dry surface and you'd struggle to stop.

On the wifes rover there was no light coming on, but the abs had a habit of kicking in for no reason when coming to a stop sometimes. The reluctor ring on the cv joint was cracked and when I came to change it there was a big lump of rust stuck to the sensor face. I think that might have affected it as the passenger side ring is cracked and braking is fine now.

I'm assuming your grinding and vibration is the abs kicking in.
