Default reprogramming keys

can you reprogramme your key yourself as ive just getting a new 3 button fob and programmed that to open and close the doors but now my key wont start the car, ive got the spare key black with a red square on the edge but im not sure if thats the master key i need to get a dealer to do it, but id like to avoid that if i can as it wont be cheap.
thanks for any help

Take the transponder out of the old key fob and put it in the new one.

On pre 1998 Fords, the master key is a solid red key. Slave keys are black with a red chip.

One post 1998 Fords, the first 2 keys programmed into the system are the masters (you turn one in the ignition, remove and do the same with the 2nd to open the system for programming), regardless of remote key or not. Any key programmed after that is a slave key. You can have 4 remote keys and a maximum of 6 or 8 keys total on the later systems.
