+ even if you did tax it, and got a mate to sort out an mot, they may still want to see / inspect the car at there office.
had to take a sierra i had once, on a low loader , for them to spend 2 mins looking at it so i could remove my plate, cunts
was mot'd , taxed and insured at the time of sending the forms off

He would then need to insure the car in order to tax it.
The cost would be just stupid, the whole idea in itself is illegal.
One of the most stupid suggestions ever i'm afraid.

Not sure if these statements are above are 100% correct.
I bought my bike with the previous owners(a good friends) private plate on it and the bike had no tax/Mot but he still managed to transfer/retain it due to the fact the bike had tax/Mot on it within the previous year.
We thought the above applied and I was happy to tax/Mot it and return the plate but I got the bike on a replacement reg after he filled a form in with the necessary fee.

Have a look halfway down this link,if the vehicle was road legal within 6 months of the application it can be considered.
I know for certain my bike had neither tax or Mot and they accepted it no problem.
**EDIT**
Here's the text.
"Vehicles must be currently licensed, or in the process of being licensed. The application will still be considered, however, where the last licence (tax disc) expired within six months of the date of application. If the licence has been voluntarily surrendered for refund, the six-month concession does not normally apply."
So not 100% sure if that's of any use to you but you never know.
This must apply to mots as well re: my bike above.

The fail comes when some styupid cunt tries to do it after a week. I heard that if you left it towards 6 months its fine.
Also I'd highly recommend transerring it direct to another car and not retention. THis was they have to change 2 logbooks at once and the chances of investigating each are slim.
But hey what would I know. I did it by the book
There is another person on here who wrote to the dvla and explained car was not worth fixing and please could he retain the plate. They said yes on the agreement that the car was scrapped.
