Might help if you first state your budget. And then the marques you intend to work at.

To get decent coverage for a lot of cars will cost a few grand. To get excellent coverage for a lot of cars will cost double that.

And to get dealer level coverage on all marques, maybe treble or quadruple that lol.

Best for what ?

Until you decide the level of depth you need to get into with diagnostics, you cant even begin to choose a "best"

Im just an amitor mechanic so all i need it for is what my first post says realy my cheap software does 90% of what i need just would like a bit better it don't always find abs faults.i don't mind spending on software as it pays for its self but on the other hand don't want or need to have the most expensive

thanks

My point is, for Ł10-20 you'll get some sort of generic OBD2 code reader that will read generic codes.

Will they always be right ? of course not.

Will it do ABS or anything else ? No.

So if you want more than basic OBD2 coverage on a variety of cars, you'll need to spend money. And as most car systems are all different, you'll often need a wide variety of equipment to communicate with the various control systems in cars. All marques are not the same, there isnt one machine that does everything, ore remotely close to it.

You could still spend a few thousand, and even on cars it's supposed to cover, still find it lacking.

Here are some places that sell equipment

Some systems do get close, but expect to say 5-10k for them. And technology moves on and things go out of date.

For example, check out price of IDS (Ford dealer tool) -

http://www.ford-ids.com/uk/start_gbr.html

Can't beat vag-com or VCDS as it's now called for VAG group.

http://www.ross-tech.com/

Engine check pro from Gendan is pretty good (only does engine though)
