im having bother getting power to a new pioneer stereo ive just bought. its a guessing game as theres no block connector, just a series of bullet connector. having wired it up and trying various combinations im unable to get any power. is there a fuse for the stereo in the fusebox on escort mk4 and can someone tell me what colour wires mean earth/live ect. im unsure if the wires carry power as ive never had a stereo fitted since owning the car. cheers fellsas

Hi mate, there is a fuse but it controls your interior light and clock as well so if their all working it's not blown.
The best way to do it if you can is get a little multimeter you can get it all sorted really easily.
There's a switched live and a permanent live,a dimmer wire and an earth (negative) wire.
The neg wire should be black, quite thick and if you get a multimeter, put it on ohms and it should read 0 ohms resistance to any unpainted body part on your car, that's your earth wire.
set your multimeter to dc volts and with the ignition key out/at zero only one of the other wires should give approx 12volts between that wire and earth, that's your permanent live.
Next, keep one lead on the earth wire you identified and switch the ignition to position "1",one of the wires should now show 12v and when the ignition is switched off it drops back to 0v,that's your switched live.
The other plug next to it should have similar coloured wires like White,White with black stripe, blue, blue with black stripe etc, these are your speaker wires, the black being the negative wire and non black being the positive side,it's pretty self explanatory.
As for front back left right etc, trial and error!!!
If you can get photos of the two looms up I'll tell you what wires do what.

The constant power feed is a red wire and the SWITCHED feed is a yellow wire, the ground will be a brown wire, this is on the car side, on your radio the earth will be the conventional colour, i.e. black.
Don't know what fuse number it will be on these, but it's almost certain to be a red 10A one.
You will need both power supplies in order for the set to operate.
The best way around this would have been to use an ISO adapter!

Mine had been butchered when I got my S2 (despite it being only 5 at that time). I elected to remove the mess and installed an ISO plug for future ease
