The current ST is way better then the Mk1 FRS just like the MK2 FRS is way better than the ST.. I dont think the new ST will be better than the current RS as it seems like ford have gone a step backwards in engine size etc the shape is all wrong and the front end is like sticking a frikin needle in my eye.. Painful.

It sounds like you are describing the ST and just got them the wrong way round!
The st steering is way lighter than the older rs, and the brakes servo assistance is far greater on st.

One of the best drives that I've ever had was in a ~2003 MK1.5 Focus 1.8 that I had as a courtesy car while my car was in for warranty work... took it up past Inverness (crazy-good roads) to go see someone and it was absolutely amazing to drive on the twisty roads.
I really want a MK1 FRS at some point as a weekend toy, think they look absolutely fantastic and are that bit more special than the MK2 ST are... obviously, if funds allow, I'd likely consider a MK2 FRS as well but it would still be a difficult decision between them both for me.
Cheers,
Grant

Was the 1.8 16v good on fuel.

As above Glenn, they're really not bad on juice as long as you're sensible... and yes, I really did mean that about the drive of the Focus, it really impressed me at the time. It was pretty new though, so depending on what age/mileage of car you're looking at, the suspension/bushes might need refreshed to sharpen it up again.
But if I was buying one, for the small increase in fuel/insurance cost, I'd go for the 130bhp 2.0 version.
Cheers,
Grant

If you decide on a 2.0 Glenn look for the ESP model.

I've had two as daily drivers
First one I brought off guzzler and it was a lovely car I did not have one problem in 12k of thrashing lol
My second I brought in September from ford and it went back 5 times in 3k miles
Got really pissed off with it so traded it in for a mk2 now
So shop about and look for service history, low owners and very good condition rather than mods ect
