Default Mk4 golf takes aaaaaages to warm up ???

My missus has a mk4 golf thats done 100k, had a service last week.
My mates a mechanic who serviced it and also cleaned the throttle and reset it.

He also checked the temp and said it was fine but i think the stats stuck open.

Today she drove 10 miles then parked for 45 mins, then drove 5 miles and parked for 2hrs then drove 5 more miles and the car was only up to 70degrees on the gauge.
That cant be right surely?

Is it worth fittin a new stat anyway?
Are they easy to fit to?

My stat is stuck open on mine at the minute and takes ages to come up to temp. Think it's fairly common

70 degrees isn't exactly cold, mid 80's is optimum temperature.

Assuming a convetional wax stat, there only a few quid, although not knowing the car it may be fairly tight etc to actually fit.

stat is pumped, there about a tenner and a bit of a squeeze to fit but simple enough really.

if the water wasnt pumping it would cause it to get hot very quickly and overheat

it will be the stat, easy cheap repair

local to some places it would be hot quickly, but not necessarily local to the temperature sensor, so you can't definitely rule out the pump on that 'evidence' alone.

most likely to be the thermostat stuck open though.

My thoughts exactly. Will fit a new stat anyway.

Car runs a bit lumpy so my thinking is it might be slightly over fuelling too (on cold start map maybe?)

To be fair thou, I wouldn't expect a car to get that hot when it's only been driven for 15-20 min, especially now as its getting colder.

I mean, the Mrs Micra takes 10-15 just to get up to temp from cold.

Thermostat. Our A3 had the same issue a month ago, we also changes the temp gauge switch for good measures
It now reaches 90 within a couple of miles and stays there as it should.

My missus mk4 golf is exactly the same!! Will only get to half way if youve been sat in traffic for 30 mins or so!! Normally takes about 20 mins to get past the first 3 lines (that all sit together) and doesnt get any warmer

petrol engines should warm up very quickly, diesels can take longer,

Bungle - of course it never hets to halfway if the way kicks in. saying that, anything out of the cold should start giving you good heat from the heater - i would check the matrix is not blocked with sludge and that any flaps and valves are working properly
