There are some properly dodgy choices going on here!

There are cars that I'd prefer to drive/own, but in terms of the most focussed driver's cars I'd have to pick a Caterham Superlight (even the smaller enginned ones are awesome) or an Exige.

haha, sounds like 1 of 2 things here, either you cant drive to save your life or the car you were driving had been involved in an accident, a very serious one

For me it's,

1. E46 M3 CSL
2. E30 325i Sport
3. Well sorted MK2 Escort
4. 22b Subaru

Im pretty sure that a westfield or Caterham or the likes would be up there in the 1--2 position but i've never owned one

Exige & Caterham the front runners then right now.... followed by Mk2 Escort & M3 CSL.

[Edit: Mk1 Focus RS gets honourable mention!]

Surprised no-one's mentioned a TVR yet.

I reckon it should be based on what people have driven/owned and should be in standard form.

From what I have driven, I'm a fan of...

Focus rs mk1
Honda civic type R EP3 JDM spec

Bearing in mind cars driven personally, I have always liked Golfs from the mk1 onwards to be honest. But a Lotus Elise is the best handling car I have driven personally along with an Evo 8.

100% agree on the dodgy choices.

And with your choices

Exiges are awesome. Been super impressed with mine. How fun, how involving, how usable and how bloody reliable it is for how fast it is, and how cheap it is to run!

E46 M3 CSL's are NOTHING like that at all in my experience.

Super stable under braking and rear very controllable.

Its a GREAT car.

From the cars I've driven so far:

Mazda MX-5. Not fast by any means but it feels so nippy and direct, it's huuuge fun to chuck one about, even if it's just a 1.6

caterham/westfield.

only if they are your own though, ive driven my friends one a few times, he's 5'-8'' and the steering wheel is way too low for me....great fun though.

out of the cars i have owned probably the mk1 RS focus the amount of grip it has is pretty astounding

i'm suprised no-one has mentioned hire cars. the most fun drive i've had was when me and a few friends hired corsas in ireland and raced through the mountains....

from my own experience and cars driven hard would be Ferrari 360, E46 M3 and then my Saff Cossie....all completely different and need to be driven differently but all rewarding when done so.

It is, started as the best drivers car, period, then edited it had to be a car you've had experience of.

Has to be one, I've got you up w/ FRS for now...

Seems their more of a liability though...

A friend had a Tuscan and I was following him through an outer urban 40mph zone one day it was damp, not wet, not icy, just damp.. he came off a roundabout fine, drove about 100yds up the road and accelerated slightly to maintain speed as it was on a gentle gradient and a slight left hand bend and the rear end went away from him.

They sound epic, they go very well but they're far from a drivers car cause if you have to hang on for dear life then, to me, that's not a drivers car!!

A drivers car is something you can jump in, engage max attack mode, point it at a demanding stretch of road/track, drive at 10/10ths and feel like $1million once you get out of it. For me price isn't important, speed (to a point) isn't important, it's all about feeling like you're connected to the car and having the confidence to push it as hard as you want and getting the most enjoyment you can from the road/track.

Cheers,
Grant

very well put i love my csl to bits but on the other hand enjoyed my 306 rallye just as much. thats a 2k car vs a 25k car. drivers cars are all about smiles pre miles i'v also just bought a clio 172 cup and thats dog shit compared to a rallye, although i know alot of people on here rate them. some cars should be takin off the list tho lol

Maybe the question should be "What car have you had the best ever drive in?"

I've been lucky enough to drive a lot of cars through work, and driven some really nutty stuff - but some of there best ever drives have been in relatively ordinary cars, but the conditions, the road, and the time of day have all conspired to make it an awesome drive.

The ones that stick in my mind are:

A Honda Accord Type-R (when they were brand new) along the A11 heading towards Hethel. It was my first taste of the VTEC and the way it demolished rows or dawdling cars/trucks really impressed me. I probably pushed my luck way too much, but it was a great drive.

A VX220 (non-turbo) along the Long Causeway/Kebs Road between Burnley/Hebden Bridge. It was a winter's morning, and I was properly on the limit on a road I knew really well. The roof was down, I was freezing cold, snot was frozen to my cheeks, but it was probably the most exciting solo drive I've ever.

Returning a couple of Caterhams back to the Caterham HQ, so along the A303 and a load of other back roads. I was in a 1.7 and the other guy was in an R400 (IIRC) He was on track day tyres, so while he had more power, I had more grip. How we got back without dying I'll never know.

I was taken out in a MTM stage 3 RS4 the V6, think it's one of them cars where you don't meet your heroes... wasn't overly impressed, felt underpowered for the spec. Always a weighty car, but never felt the same in a E39 M5 which was barely stage 1, mapped w/ filters. Maybe powerband or mapping in the RS I dunno.

I agree, can I set-up a poll on my 1st post or does it need to be new thread... ? Can't see the option or I'm slightly retarded

Never thought there would be such a mad cross section of cars picked TBH! was thinking once 4 or 5 start peaking above the rest start a fresh thread with a poll for the best, but there's still LOADS competing.

Poll options:
-Outright best car to drive ever built standard
- " " " " " " " " " modified
-Best car you've driven or been driven in all considered
???

I personally think it's horses for courses putting Caterhams with Evo's, or Mk2 Escorts with M3 CSL's. Needs a mechanical vs. tech element too. Should of thought this through

Ford Puma 1.7, the FRP's are awesome!

great chassis, handles and grips well, superb through the twisties. best handling car by far when your on a budget.

people take the piss saying the puma is a girls/hardressers car, but once you've been in one on a B road pushing hard into corners and feeling rewarded for your efforts, you soon realise just how well planted a car it is.

its hard to find anything that handles as well in the price range they fall into IMHO

Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi.

Don't think I've ever driven anything as quick down local B roads as that car. So much information and feedback through the wheel.

For me, that was the best driver's car I've ever driven.

Close second would be a Caterham Superlight R500, but it was pure sensory overload. Still the most exciting car ever for me....

I'd agree with that - I've had some fun drives in some really rubbish cars over the years (Remember that 'spirited drive' to Brunters, you in the Boxster, me in that Hyundai Coupe?)

That road reminds me of another great drive in a really rubbish car - It was when I worked on Revs and we did the 'Dog's of War' I was in the Granada 2.8iS, and the other guy was in a Jag XJS 5.3. It was dry, but I had to keep the wipers on as so much oil was spraying out of the back of his car. Surprisingly there wasn't much between the cars on the open road. At Brunters it was a different story, Dan's Jag managed 149mph - not bad for a £750 car!

Most fun stdish car ive owned was an S13 200sx 1.8 turbo, was std except for shocks and springs. Was so much fun to drive as it was really tail happy but so controllable. Wish id never sold it, will have another some day.

I haven't got the wealth of experience as many on here being of a tender age, but, the 'Best' car I've ever driven was a Porsche 997 GT3, although I couldn't push it as hard as I would have liked as it was 3 days old with 16 miles on it and the owner was sat next to me. However, you just knew it meant business.

The quickest I've ever driven a car, wasn't even the best experience. It was an Evo 8 FQ340 and was a very good car, but just felt a bit foolproof. I drove it on track very, very hard and never once felt like I was really pushing it, if you know what I mean. Very capable, just a bit boring.

But then, as Dan said, the most fun I have ever had in a car was when I took my stripped out '82 XR3 up the Elan Vally and through Rhyader last year. Great roads, great weather and the car drove supurbly.
