Default are AP 4 paddle clutches a nightmare???

ive got a 4 paddle clutch to go in my car but im a bit unsure as you hear they are a right bastard to drive with , now i know the alcon 6 paddle is the choice of most but seeing as ive got this i dont want to have to spend 350+ on a clutch if i can get away with the ap one, so what are they like? are they liveable or a total pain
cheers carl

I can't understand why anyone would find a paddle clutch hard to use? Unless you go for the heaviest one going and get stuck in traffic every day!

I fitted an AP 4 paddle clutch on my car after my alcon 6 paddle wore out i hated it and i changed it very quickly to a new alcon kit.

I would never fit one to my car again.

horrible to drive very on off IMO

cheers

The Gartrac had a new AP 6 paddle in it and was spot on
I have had loads of AP 4 paddles and they do feel a little on/off at 1st but you soon get used to it

made me not want to drive the car. then when i blew a diff on gear change i had enough and dropped the box and swapped the clutch over.

yeah its deffo a on off clutch but the fooker dont slip

i love mine to be honest with the exception of hil; starts in fooking st albans , cant ride the clutch there as theres fooking traffic lights and then usiong the hand brake and the fooking makes the prop knock a bit when fisrt engaging, but then when the fooker dont slip then ya cant argue

so i like mine, as for what it feels like, i find theres no difference to my cabrio with a fooked relese bearing, thats on-off too

Having driven a saff with an AP4 in, and on Mike's advice, gone to Alcon 6, it was the best decision I ever made.

Obviously, it is the cover that gives the pedal the feel, but you wont get away with an AP 4 plate behind a standard Ford cover.

had a new clutch on mine but soon as it was set up on a stage three conversion it
kept slipping! so put a ap 4 paddle clutch plate in with the standard pressure plate as it was new,it is fine did not slip and still had a nice clutch pedal!
the car has done many 1/4 mile sprint's and 0to60 run's and has been abused
regularly and has not given me any problem's

Ive a 4 paddle in mine, and yes they are slightly different to a standard clutch, but as said above they dont take long to get used to.

Its my understanding that the 4 paddles dont have the same bite as a 6, as they have less friction plates. So its kind of between a normal and a 6 paddle....

I wouldn't change mine

I have found the ap 4 paddle costs more than the ap 6 paddle.
Where is the best place (best being cheapest) place to get a 6 paddle alcon from?

Thanks

mrviper - Mine lasted me about 13-15k miles. I dodn't really keep track of mileage so I'm not 100% sure, but it did withstand loads of launches and abuse.

Cheers,

never had a prob with mine , had it over 5 years same pressure plate ( AP unit) and 4 paddle clutch , its probably done 60 or so standing starts with slicks and prob in the region of 4000 miles or so and handles nye on 400ft lb regularly , only had it replated once never ever slipped - only had it replated cause i had the box out

alot of the problem is people not doing the job properly , if your engine needs a better clutch , why only buy half of the proper kit ? ok so you say its because it make teh pedal feel heavy , so teh best conversion must be to go hydraulic and teh full kit then no clutch probs what so ever ?
