Default Dog Box for RWD Cosworth Rallycar

Im thinking about a new gearbox for my rwd Sapphire Rallycar,
at the moment i drive the stock T5 Box.

I think at a H-Plattern dogbox or gearkit, 5 or better 6 Gears..

I know R&D make some and i was allready in contact with them but first i will look around which alternatives i have.

I think Quaife do something for the Cosworth but they are not the best coice for
Rally use.

Are the any other good boxes available?

Its about £6k for an Elite 6 speed. So not crazy money.

I have had bad experiences with Quaife gearkits.

But Mark is far far more experienced with Rallying and Rally gearboxes. If he says a Quaife G60 is fine. I would trust his opinion and experience.

In our Escort we have the R&D 6-Speed overdrive, and its quite good i think.
In which car do you drive the Elite box?

The Quaife is ratet for 375bhp, but it would be fine to have more reserves,
so i think rallyusage is hard for a gearbox.

BTW., i will try do stay under £5k.

PPG/Pfitzner make a dog gearset for the T5.

That CNC Head place is a distributor for them, they had a stand at TOTB this year

Pretty sure this place does too, although dont see it listed anymore. They have MT75 stuff though

Westfield. But it was developed for Mk2 Escort I was told. Seems to take 500bhp fine. Lots of people running them in big power cars.

but I know shockloading and stuff that occurs on rallies affects gearboxes etc etc.

I would listen to Markk.

I have send Emails to Quaife, SQS, fixit and gears.tv and waiting for replys.

But i think i would prefer a H-Plattern box, so i think they have higher service intervals
as a sequential box.

I recently sent an email to Quaife and they didn't even bother to respond...

Better to call them I think!

I got a respond, but:

We will not have either a dog or straight cut gearkit but we do uprated sets which are sold through Competition Transmission Services

thats because someone who knows nothing about cars or gearboxes answered your email.

for th T5 they do nothing other than a gearkit as above, sold through bernie at CTS.

but if you change the box to some other box i.e type 9 based boxes, then quaifes latest units are pretty good and sequential.

Yes they have a lot for T9 type, but rated unter 300bhp, so i dont think they will
live long in a cossi..

At the moment in favourid is still the R&D box, but i have some time to look for alternatives..
The new gearbox is planned for the winterbreak..

A friend of mine told me the Getrag Boxes which are driven in BMW M3 had to fit, but im not shure and i never see one for sale or who is driven in a cossi.

http://www.quaife.co.uk/shop/search/...xonomy%253A619

have a read here, the 69G will do 750hp

I ran a 5 speed h pattern T9 dog box for ages in a 2wd sierra rally car.

ive even run a 5 speed quaife clubman for about 6 rallies, they only rate them for about 175hp.

HP is not your concern, especially with a turbo rally car, torque should be what your looking at, if your making near 500ft/lb at 3000rpm then your gonna kil alot of gearboxes lol

PPG stuff seems to be good, wasn't aware they did a T5 dog kit.

MK Motorsport is selling the big Quaife sequential, may be worth dropping him a email.

I've had both the Quaife and R&D six speed dog boxes in my track car.....The R&D is a far better box, although the customer service isnt great !

I race in the CTCRC and have done so for the last few years.

Both gearboxes were 2wd H-Pattern 6 speed dog boxes, and I've had the R&D one for the last three years. Its done standing starts for the last three years, and takes all of abuse thrown at it, whereas the Quaife went through two gear sets ! I've had the same issue with getting parts tho, as they never seem to have any stock, but there's no comparison in the quality compared to the Quaife unit. Oh, I'm running over 400bhp and loads of torque, so it has no issues handling this sort of power.

So you would say the R&D is better and has a better quality?

Ok, i heard some reports about quaife, and they shud be not the best boxes..

Yes on both counts.

The Quaife feels like a very old gearbox in comparison to the R&D, and I'd never buy another one (Quaife). I think the gearbox is probably the best part about my car (although the modified wheel arches are nice - but thats another thread! lol)

The only issue I've ever had is with regards to getting spare parts, as mentioned below. But I hasten to add, this has only been to replace parts as a precautionary measure (e.g. first gear). It still worked perfectly, but had signs of wear, which is not surprising due to the number of standing starts I do. So it was easier to replace it whilst its stripped apart being checked over as opposed to waiting until it breaks.

I dont have any pictures, but I'm racing at Rockingham this weekend if it helps.

I think we made some minor mods to the tunnel (e.g. clearance for the gear lever), but nothing major. I also run a hydraulic clutch, so I've never tried this with the cable, and I wouldnt want to either. No idea re the speedo, as I've never run one on my car, but if necessary, you can always fit a gps device to give you a speed reading.

The way from germany to Rockingham could be a little bit to far for a look

But i think if it use the stock bell it will be possible to use cable clutch..
But the stock prob shaft can be used, or not?

I've just noticed that, leave now just in case lol

The bell housing is Ford, as we had to have that to comply with our championship regulations, I can probably get some photo's if you like, as I'll no doubt be under the car at some point this weekend, the joys of racing and all that !!!

We did have a new prop made, but I'll have to check if we had the length altered. I have a company in St Neots called Bailey Morris that did it, and it wasnt expensive.

How about some in car footage - its from a track day so we're not really on it much, but you'll get the idea:
