Don't get a Passat with the tiptronic box and you'll be fine.

I think they both have there fair share of problems to be honest.
People always bang on about DMF's on tdcis but vw have the same problem along with injectors, pumps and turbos ect ect.

See this is what bothers me, i've had the Mondy 4 years and done 70k miles in it without a single fault.
Looking at replacing it with another Mondy TBH cos it's been that good, but hearing too many tales of woe regarding pumps/injectors etc etc.
So what is the best diesel out there for reliability??

Citroen? Same engine as the Ford isn't it?
Which would also rule out a Volvo, Jag X type and Peugeot.
I'm after a replacement workhorse estate TBH, image not a consideration, just reliability and low running costs.
Any experience of the 2.2 Honda's?

ive had my tdci for 5 years now, only had to replace the clutch & dmf, one brake caliper.
BUT having said that, im reluctant to go for another tdci just incase i pick up a lemon, i think to be perfectly honest i would go for an Audi tdi of some sort next if it was diesel i went for, although im thinking of going big cc BMW petrol if i can.

vw pd engines are far more reliable than ford tdci the 150 or 170 is the one to have same engine in seat and skoda
octavia not a bad car for money
or how about a bmw 330d

A 530d would by my first choice TBH but too expensive really for what i'm after.
Been reading some horror stories of injector problems on Siemens equipped VW's.....it's not only Ford it seems.

Surely that's more to do with branding than reliability? Initial cost of a VW is considerably more than a Ford and residuals on most (all?) German stuff have always been strong.

The newer shape mondy comes wit a 2 litre 140 bhp and im led to beleive is nothing the same as the older shape mondy and is reliable. Would personally have vw audi skoda etc. they do the new octavia vrs in a diesel now. Then again my pal has a 2.0tdi 56 reg a6 and blew the turbo. dealer fitted arecon one and it went bang again with 25 miles. so is havingn a new one direct from audi under warranty. think its rare though. perhaps ford would have been better using bosch from the start. regars ford having the pug/citroen engine. thats only the 1.4/1.6 tdci. ok apart from blowing injector seals which isnt a massive job

Plenty of problems with the VW PDI engines, injectors, DPF and ABS pump failures. Check out the VW, Audi and SEAT websites and you would see the same problems.

Why not stick with what you've got as its been very reliable and you know the history and just put the extra you would have had to spend on a newer car in the bank.

I work for the royal mail on the vans.Im sure the tranny van engines are similar to the mondeos and the engines are spot on.The only.problems we have had are a valve on the fuel pump which causes the idle to be irattic.
We have a tranny with 220,000 mile and its still going strong.
If you fancy a change go for it but like you said your mondy has only go 70k on so i would just keep it.

you cant genralise ford vs vw, but as a rule dont buy any lucas delphi fuel injected diesel, so that narrows it down! buy bosch if its common rail or get a vw with a rotary pump or PD engine. Simple.

the 2 litre tdci engines are ford, and they are crap too, timing chains fall off, delphi fuel injection system is garbage.
The 2.2 honda engine is good if you keep it in oil (like all engines of course) the only thing is they have a very big appetite for oil, having just re-built one due to a housewife not checking the oil between services (look on ebay there are loads with fucked engines!)

no PD has a dpf
, plus they are largley considered as the most reliable and tunable diesel ever built. I think you need to look at some of the websites devoted to lucas delphi stuff shredding itself and filling the injectors and fuel system with swarf! my mate has just replaced an injector in his mandildo tdci, the problem is not the injector but the pump shredding itself. This car is back up and running with a new injector, and for sale, any takers??? ![tiff](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/punchballs.gif)

I know the Pug HDi's have one after the HP pump so somtimes you find abit of swarf in there.

My dad runs an 06-plate Volvo S80 D5, he's had it from about 9 months old/10k miles and it's now sitting around 103k miles... hasn't had any issues apart from a connector on a headlight bulb and a couple of bushes. It's also returning something crazy like 46mpg average, which for it's size, comfort, reliability and acceptable performance is great.
If I needed a big, new diesel family wagon... then I'd be very tempted to go for a Volvo D5-engined car.![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)
Cheers,
Grant

they all have problems in my experience so i would just go for the car you like most and take a chance, i prefer the way the mondeos drive compared to the vw as i find the engines unrefined

Just to clarify, my Mondy now has 134k on, hasn't missed a beat in the 70k i've covered in it.
Not sure how long it would run for but I do need a reliable motor for regular trips all over the country.
Tough call!

Ive had my mondeo tdci for awile now and ive never had a problem with it. good cars i think. You will get problems with most kinds of car but i think people go abit over the top bout things like this. you are only ever going to hear bad things on the net about cars.

ive had a few octavias and superbs and they are fantastic
the superb got to around 140k in my hands in that time needing an alternator at 130k
and teh octavial got to about 130k and needed nothing, i saw the guy who bought it and he had replaced the clutch and fly at 155k (i thrashed this car every day in every way to the 130k mark so it really was good! on variable service too!) i beat them both up by jumping over bridges and humps in the fens, and the superb would go thru a set of fronts in 6k how i drove it but still did 60mpg (if i was stuck behind someone)
i'd deffo go vag but consider skodas as they can often have better spec and be cheaper, if a little tame looking

conversely i like the look of lagunas (about 04 shape) and there are tons on ebay with busted engines (plenty under 80k) but my aunty has one at 150k + and it runs perfect

Coming from a cossie/rs ownership, ive got a golf gt tdi 130 remapped to maybe 170-180
Ive seen 74mpg on a run, and the power is there, if needed. It upsets a few cars, and you get the MPG.
Definitely a contender...
