Anyone got any idea why the batt light is on, on a 2.5 cougar. new alternator fitted and no output!!! Cables and fuses all ok!! any thoughts greatfully accepted.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
are you checking the output on the battery or at the alternator ? If no output at the alternator then I guess it's faulty.. was it new or re-furbed ?
Did you swap anything over onto the new alternator or was it just a straight swap for the old one ?
could be the battery if it's been worked hard by having a dodgy alternator..
hth..

More than likely it has a "Smart charge" system, you should have a 3 pin plug on the unit itself, the wires are known to break and lead to a no charge system. I believe if you disconnect this plug, you have a normal charging system and so check if it's charging...?
It's rarely the alternator itself that is at fault!

I thought it had a smart charge system but my autodata doesn`t cover wiring on this car for some reason! Thanks for the tip on the 3 pin plug I wondered how to get round it. Thanks to you both for the response.

yes it is smart charge as already mentioned above. the 3 pin plug .it is available from ford as a short loom for a transit . removing the plug sets it to default ie acts like a normal alternator
