Default What is the best/toughest engine de-greaser around??

I've just got myself a Focus which I think needs a rocker cover gasket... and has done for a while looking at the bay, it's not a pretty sight at all.

This car isn't going to be winning any concourse competitions, in fact it's only likely to be used for carting the dogs around in, BUT... I'd like to clean it right up to start off with, so thought that before I get set in about the engine to fix things, it'd be good to get most of the oily/dusty shite off.

What do you guys recommend??

Not fussed if it comes from halfrauds or online... although not wanting to spend mental money on it, considering the value of the car, so nothing made with the tears or squirrels, eyelash of unicorn, thoughts of tibetan monks and a dash of de-ionized mucus from a swahili tribal cheif that the boys on Detailing World would pull their plonkers over!!

Cheers,
Grant

Gunk. About Ł4 a tin. 2 tins should cover you easily and its water soluble. spray it on, wait 5 mins and get in there with a paintbrush then hose it off.

if you have a pressure washer, 50:50 mix of petrol to diesel is very good stuff for degreasing, but it needs the pressure washer to get rid of that last oily residue from the diesel imo, and be careful about that tea break fag

might have to invest in a couple of aerosole's of that

so you take the battery out, spray it on, leave it a little while, use a brush to agitate it then hose it off without soaking the electrics too much?

yeah pretty much thats it. they do it in tins you "paint" straight on too if you prefer but for an engine still in the bay i'd say use the spray for hard to reach bits and if needby do it a few times if you can't get to it all with a brush.

I'm not saying its the best as i dont know, but its good stuff for the money.

I've used Gunk before, but wasn't sure if it would have been heavy enough duty to clean off a lot of old dirt/oil which has been left for a while.

I think I've heard of people using that POR-15 before, sounds like it's pretty potent stuff.

Cheers,
Grant

A lot of garages have diesel powered steam cleaners, find one that does, pop in with a box of tetley and some hob knobs and see if they'll do it for you!

With POR-15 you can dilute it a lot and it still works pretty well.

Trust me, Jizer is the one to use.

Paint brush and pour some in a pot, brush on and wait. Agitate then hose off. Job jobbed.

How long will it have to keep your drive company for now then?

For all those that said steam cleaner did you mean steam or just a water pressure washer?

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll do a bit of reading and see what the crack is for each one.

That option is unavailable to me at the moment mate.

I've only got a little over 5 months left now mate, got a funny feeling it's going to draaaag in too!! The car will be used by anyone that wants to use it though, it's a runaround car to take the dogs out in which I'm buying, fixing, funding and not driving this year.

Cheers,
Grant

i tried the carplan engine degreaser today and it seemed to work okay, needed a good bit of elbow grease though, and it didnt want to get the baked-on grime off so i had to get rid of that with fairy liquid

Gonna get some jizer or gunk next time i think

megs super degreaser is the strongest stuff ive used but pricy autosmart g101 is good but just really stuborn stains youl go over a few times with 101 compared to the megs stuff.
I personaly just use decent stuff in engine bays and use steam cleaner usually to wash off although both products above work great with cold water.

Plus 10 dissolves thick grease and oil with relative ease, just give it a bit of a brush for more stubborn areas then jet wash or ideally steam it off. I have back to backed it with AutoSmart TFR (neat) on an engine and it pissed all over the TFR.

Steam cleaner, we've got one at work that works like a pressure washer, it chucks pressurised water out of the lance but at 140 degrees via a diesel burner. It has a reservior that you fill with whatever cleaning solution you fancy, it really would get shit off a blanket.
