I've had my current workhorse Mondeo estate for nearly 4 years now, it's an 04 2.0 TDCi estate, 6 speed, 130hp. Paid just over £5k for it, total bargain at the time and was showing 66k when I bought it.
It's now turned over 132k miles, so i'm thinking of getting something younger. It's never missed a beat despite all the horror stories i've heard about the Ford diesel systems. Looking to spend around £6k, need some opinions on the following as far as reliability goes, all diesels:
Honda Accord
Toyota Avensis
New shape Mondeo (same engine as what i've got already).
Jag X Type (same motor as above?)
Volvo V50 (same as above again?)
Passat
I can't find anything thats around 3 years old with 60k miles for £5k tho....
Would be very happy with a 530d but too pricey for me TBH at the age i'd be happy with.
It will spend most of it's life on motorways, doing around 20k miles a year. I honestly can't fault my current Mondy for performance and economy so i'm very tempted to get another. Opinions welcome from those diesel experts lurking on here.

The Volvo V50 is a very nice car, what about the S40? Stunning car in Sport trim.
New shape Mondys are lovely too, but the French diesel engines in both of these are a worry tbh.

as above i'd say you've got a good one and should keep it longer. will give you more time to save up then to raise your budget for when it does give problems/run its course/etc

think i'd be heading towards the octavia or superb, yes there v dub engines, but i've seen a few with over 400,000 mile on the same engine. bullet proof. the mondeo by the sounds of it has paid for its self since you had it though so why not run it?? yes you may encounter a few problems by the time you reach 200,000 but so long as you service it regular, especially change oil and filter regular the engine should last the course, granted other things wear out.. I drive a 54 plate connect tdci for work, it has 274,000 on the same engine, but fully serviced without fail, it is starting to chug a bit on cold start up with a little blue smoke but still pulls like a train, had a gearbox though. we also have a few focus tdci's and most of them are well over 200,000, one has 360,000 on it. it all depends if you want to take the risk of maybe having to spend a few quid. hope this helps.

My old man is on his second new shape mondeo now. Both auto's, last one was 140ps and this one is 163ps.
He ran the 140ps one to about 130k and someone else in the company has it now. It's been totally faultless, serviced on time and it's needed nothing other than that. Admitted it's spent it's life on the motorway but he wasn't shy about booting it when he could.
Gavin.

Spending money on a replacement may sound daft, but if the pump/injectors go i'm looking at big bills. Seems to be the consensus that it should be OK seems it's got to 130k with no problems though?
