To what level can wheel damage be repaired? Or can I still get new ones?

Default To what level can wheel damage be repaired? Or can I still get new ones?

I've got a set of old skool, flat face comps in 17x8, Grp A fitment, but a couple of them are damaged. I've got five in total, but two of them have damage to the inside of the rim, that appears to have been welded in the past.

To what degree can these be fixed, or are they scrap? Am I to understand that they've been re-released so I could potentially replace them if need be?

Apparently they were ok, but I've not had them on a car. Judging by the balance weights on a couple of them, they took some setting, so a bit of buckling wouldn't surprise me!

I shall go and grab a pic or two!

Think they have started making them again, at least, someone told me that on here a wee while back... so if they do turn out to be scrap, then you shouldn't be too stuck and could just buy a replacement.

Cheers,
Grant

You'd be surprised what can be fixed. I totally fucked a wheel years ago, and was fixed as good as new.

I personally wouldn't use them again. You've no idea how good the repair actually is, and it's just not worth the risk IMHO.

They won't be used again without being checked by someone reputable. Got a couple of good local places I can use, so will take them down and have a chat with them. They're not going to be used for anything extreme most likely, so won't be doing 200mph on them or anything!

looking at the amount of weight they have used i would be very surprised if they were still round (true)
But they are still repairable

i sent my OZ magnesium wheels to Ian jemison engineering which came off a group A rally car so some were quiet battered ,they came back like new & cost me Ł50 per wheel .
they trued up the wheels then tig welded any repairs machined up all faces so looked good as new stripped then powder coated & stickers .

All that for Ł50 notes a wheel? That's pretty bloody good!

That sounds like an absolute bargain per wheel, even if it costs you a bit of cash to arrange a courier to/from them on top.

Cheers,

That's awesome value. You're looking at more than that for powder coating alone at most places!!!

So cheap i'd be dubious. I have repair wheels in the past but don't like doing it. Never had/heard of a problem afterwards. I'd only do it if somebody cannot find a replacement, to weld them propperly its not a cheap process a lot of the time its cheaper to buy a second hand wheel instead.
