I know James pretty well, he built the megasquirt on my corsa, and I spoke to him at great lengths about mapping the C20LET engine when he did a friend of ours who has a Viva Van.

He's one of life's good guys, not just in it for the money at all, he's a real enthusiast.

so looking at either fitting throttle bodies on the 130 spec 1800 zetec i have or just fitting a fiesta turbo set up but with ms on either choice

Update guys, just back from mapping, after fiting my brand new AET wideband gauge, all cruise area is mapped well now, and it is mapped for upto 12psi boost, goes very well at that (better than the old turbo at 1.2 bar!) an increase to around 1.1 bar should see 320 to 340 bhp, that will be after i fit a larger capacity top mount intercooler.

Ah right, I hadn't noticed you'd posted at the same time as me before!! The 20g is a nice turbo, specially if you upgrade to a EJ25 at some point in the future.

Which TMIC are you going for?? The STi 7/8/9 are decent upgrade for the money, however, they're said to start to struggling at ~400bhp... but if you drive the car properly then the transmission is likely to cause bigger (more expensive issues) at that level anyway.

Was going to get a brand new "big" one off ebay, like the fmic you get but designed for top mount fitment, ill not be over 350bhp so hopefully the gearbag will hold together for me

Dont expect that 150 quid to actually include any decent standard of balancing.

Im sure it works, but Im also sure it wont last as well as a decent one would.

You pay your money and take your chance at the end of the day, personally I would sooner pay a bit more for something that I know is right when it comes to turbos, as it get messy when they go through an engine.

Mind you my turbo is worth 5 times what my engine cost me, so Ive probably gone too far the other way, lol

Agreed, but then if you are going to run a turbo not very hard, it means you have a bigger turbo than you need and more lag etc, personally I would sooner have a turbo I know I can use flatout and it be fine.

A mate of mine has just fitted one of those cheapo chinese turbo's to an E30 2.5 we've converted, I did advise against it but he bought one anyway, I'll be mapping that in the next few weeks so will soon see how well it lasts! lol

Ive stripped and compared a chinese turbo to a garrett before, all the bearings and parts are exactly the same size, as for balancing; it has been balanced and does not vibrate like an unbalanced turbo (ive heard this before when i mixed and matched a load of bits to build one) so im guessing it should be ok, fudgey used one on his zetec turbo running silly boost so at just over a bar it will be ok.
THE funny thing is; i took off my old td04 to replace it with this one and it too looks like a copy! and it was runninng fine before at 20 psi boost lol.

Copying / reverse engineering, is something that the chinese are very good at, its how they save on development which makes things cheaper.

Sadly the other saving seems to be on QA, which is why they vary so much, the fact that one is fine doesnt mean that another will be as there isnt the consistancy of manufacture in the first place.

Well i ran a Ł150 chinese t34 .63 on my mk3 escort zvh for over a year and 12,000 quite hard miles (I live in the country in scotland with excellent roads)at 1 bar boost, and after all that all it needed was an exhaust bearing as the one in it had slight play, this was most probably my fault as i never let the turbo spool down after a thrash (oil cooled only) There was no smoke or loss of power from it at all either. The other one i used was on my sierra (Actually was the first one with a new centre cartridge, same turbine wheel and shaft and compressor wheel and housings, which i re built myself with no balancing, as it doesnt need balanced if you line it up correctly!)- it did 2500 miles before i sold the car and ive not heard of it failing yet.
My mate ran one in his 2.8 vr6 mk1 golf, 6000 miles no worries and he has just fitted one to his mk2.8 24v 4x4 golf, currently on low miles though.
I guess time will tell with this one as it is a slightly different design, but i will happily post failure or success on here and highlight what has gone wrong or done well.

worth mentioning simon from SAS has just replaced a gen garrett due to failure, and it did no engine dammage at all

really? look at the pics of my one, it looks like any other turbo, cheap or dear, the castings are all very good quaility, the bolt holes are all perfect as is every aspect i can see, and im from a manufacturing/machining background, how many people use pattern camshafts in their cvh's and pattern water pumps?

Yeah your castings look much better than the one my mate has just bought, they look terrible!
Juat to point out that pattern pumps and cams do not spin at 150'000rpm so tolerance is not such an issue lol

fudgey's turbo had play in the shaft after 197 miles - i know as was thinking of buying it

i have been told if you run these turbos at least than 20psi they will be fine - anything more and it will fail.

Good bit of kit if done right.

A few years ago I threw a Rover V8 into an E36 and used Megasquirt on it - took me about 6 hours to make the engine loom and cover it with fire retardent covering etc but the result looked decent enough and was electrically sound.

Half the battle with this sort of thing is the unknown element of using old parts and old wiring - Sort that out and the rest is easy enough.
