I don't think you will be able to get a cheap axle that will take 400bhp, though its torque and too many hard launches that kill diffs imo ![Wink](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
Atlas axle's can take some power, just not sure on how much!

How limited is your budget?
Ford 8.8 as fitted to Mustang and large U.S ford saloons are far cheaper than Atlas will take around 300 standard on a heavy car, so in a light Mk1 far more, and can be upgraded relatively cheaply.

Wide arches mean wide rubber and its the traction that will break a axle.
Atlas is proven but a proper one isn't cheap, yank stuff clearly works but weighs a fair bit so depends if that bothers you or not.

had a couple though the black batmobile years ago was mine 2.8 special, and a orange v8 one, the back axles used to be available dirt cheap but i suspect there fetching more nowadays.

A Atlas is ya best option but for that power you will need to run two pice shafts, even with wide arches it will want narrowing as well.
Atlas may seam pricey to start with but at least all the parts are proven and easy to get 4 link kits, brakes, diff's etc.
Your proberbly still looking at £1600 to get somthing ready to roll.

Just been to Fostek and written a guide about Atlas axles; cost a fair bit of money.
If your Escort is bubble arched you can track down a Narrow Atlas from a Mk1 Capri V6 which fit nicely. They cost about £300.
Standard shafts are rated to 300bhp or so then they start snapping.
You ideally need an LSD (£700) and good 2 piece shafts cost about £500 by the time they are all fitted. They aren't cheap but will take the power.

Quite sure the standard Atlas LSD was a ZF plated one, I sold my diff alone for good money and the complete axles these days ( unless your lucky ) do fetch a few quid.
