BAR F1 to use "seamless gearshift". ZEROSHIFT??
According to Autosport magazine ( www.autosport.com ) the FIA has approved BAR's new gearbox for the 2005 season.

According to a later article it also seems that a few other teams are using this as well:

Wonder if this is based on ZEROSHIFT??
I remember that there were quite a few sceptics to Zeroshifts new ideas when they were introduced to this site....

BAR gearbox gets green light
BAR's controversial new gearbox system has been approved for use in this year's Formula 1 series, it was revealed yesterday. The system allows the drivers to change gears with virtually no break in power, giving them a vital advantage against the competition.

'Seamless' gearbox not unique
BAR will not be the only team that starts the year with its much-hyped '‘seamless shift' gearbox system, autosport.com has learned, with at least three other teams believed to be developing the devices in readiness for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

It's a bit odd as Xtrac make all/most/vital components for EVERY F1 gearbox, so i'm suprised one team have got in there on their own!
Good luck though - will be great for Jenson if he can find some more pace in the car

Oh and James, thanks for the link. Doesnt really explain it though does it. The thing about the runner and the guy with the bottle is nonsense though. As for 1 split second they are both stationary. Hence a break in power.

the bottle is stationary relative to both runners, but they're still both running forwards

Thats not the example though. They're saying that as the runner goes past, the guy handing him the bottle is not moving. The bottle was not moving either before the runner touched it.

Ahhh, so it replaces the synchros / dog teeth. So there isnt the slight delay whilst they adjust themselves to the same speed before allowing the dog to slide across.
Im guessing that the shafts all run at the same speed internally. Clever if it works

If you think of the "derailleur" gearshift system on a bike, you have a smooth transmission between two different ratios.
I`m not saying Zeroshift/BAR F1 is the same as the cycle system though. I also think that there's been a TVR runing around with the Zeroshift transmission.
Bernie/Gearboxman might know more about this though...

Rich_w,
I understand the VW/Audi double clutch system
I understand the VW/Audi double clutch system
rich - you heard of DSG ???
or has anyone heard of DSG for the vas group ?
i was actually gonna ask about this, the DSG system is actually classed as an automatic box, but in reality is acomputer controlled manual, the beuaty of it and the key to its smoothness is the fact that it actually selects two gears at once - sound familiar .................................................. ..............................
