Personally on a trackday, I only ever drive Combe at 8/10ths and always leave something in reserve.

Put me on track at Bedford, and I'll happily push the limits as I know my chances of damaging the car are minimal, but do the same at Combe and there's a fair chance of writing the car off...

pretty sensible at combe...tbh i found backing off into the chicanes actually put in a quicker lap.

There were a lot of quick cars on the straights that were pants in the bends...it's annoying cos the bends is the only thing i can do, and i'd catch something, they were just about to move out the way, and then they would drive past on the striaghts...

Pembray all the way

Just because a car is an XR2, why is it a shitter? 300bhp is fine in FWD

The Gooon has 300bhp and thats an Austin, but ita not slow around combe and we did do some good laps in it

Between camp and avon rise I can see 135-140. Having watched from quarry for nearly 28 years I have seen various marques stuff it into the barrier at quarry because of leaving it too late to brake, the back gets light, locks the rear wheels - you're a passenger. Mark 1 Lotus Cortinas, Mark 2 Jags, many cars from the pre 65 saloon car championship, all fairly heavy cars. The thing with cars like mine is you have phenomenal acceleration, pretty good braking, but once the speed has been scrubbed off to get over avon rise you're back on the throttle to speed up to the entrance to quarry. Large turbo - you're not on full boost at this point - gives the impression you're 'not on it', well that's my experience.

Good to see you too mate. Yep, getting old pal, remember driving Coombe long before the chicanes, was a very quick circuit in those days, in my old Lotus Cortina, was very hairy

Cool, thanks

In case you were wondering why she was so slow on the outlap she had a chronic misfire, think the plugs had fouled up in the queue, it litteraly just misfired nonstop the whole first lap, we thought we were going to have to come in but then luckily it cleared as she pulled onto the main straight and just went intermittant after that.
We didnt realise your car was slow (looks like it should be 300bhp, didnt realise it was group n and hence standard engine) so she kept pulling over to the left to let you past but obviously you didnt have enough go to get by, so eventually she braked to let you and the white fiesta past and then just followed you around for the rest of the session.
Was good fun for her having a relatively even car to be out against, just a real pain she had an annoying on/off misfire, typically it hadnt done it once on the 80 mile journey to the track or on the way back, just while we were there, lol

Got a new coilpack now and will be the changing the plugs, hopefully that will sort it and next time she wont look like she is trying one minute and then not the next!

Fantastic getting nearly the whole session on video like that though, thanks very much for sharing

no worries...as long as she enjoyed it. I was only out to get back into driving and shakedown the car, so i wasn't to worried.

worryingly it took all day for me to get back into driving. Havn't done it in 6 months. End of the day was much better...did a 1.26 at the end of the day. started out on a 1.33. Ganna keep getting in the car now.

i felt road cars kept getting hot on the longer sessions and were dropping power in later laps. It's surprising how much more performance is required just to keep peak.

I think road cars really suffered on road tyres.

We were on a048 tyres which dont go off too badly, but they are totally worn out now (below legal for road use), and you do notice a lot of dropoff when they get that low.

The morning was great, just a shame that the afternoon was all queue and no tracktime!

1.26 sounds pretty reasonable for the power that you have. Im only a couple of seconds quicker than that in my clio with 160 or so bhp and I should think mine is lighter (not the one in this video which has leather and aircon etc, I mean my blue mk1 one)

sounds about right...just developing a new engine now with the engine builder next door. Tarmac rally tyres i had were strange cos they went to complete soft mush on the surface but once cleaned on the road he tread's hardly disappeared.

Problem is is that when you can out turn and brake other stuff, it just pulls away on the straight.

Looking just to put a small supercharger for track work on...seems feesable.

A little centrifugal charger would work well with standard compression, expensive though.

We didn't get any clear runs as such, I timed a 1:19 with Ratty at the wheel, that was running on Dunlop DGZ03s on the maestro
I was out with the Blue XR2, straight line power seemed quite simlar but managed to pull 6 car lengths between chicaines, over too him out of bobbies if I remember right.
Gooon is pretty good in the corners and not bad in a straight line for a 1986 maestro

1:19 is a very good laptime.

Puts you only 2 seconds off the pace of Martin and Sketch in fact IIRC

Do you have a video of that? Not saying I dont believe you, but just would be interesting to watch and even to verify the timing thats all

Thats the target time I have set my mrs for getting round in my yellow clio when its done, so I know its possible from a FWD trackday (as opposed to race) car or I wouldnt be aiming for it myself.
