could someone set the record straight?
Hi all, im just in need of a quick question, a friend of mine is really bugging me, he is saying that if you are speeding and a off duty police officer is behind ( just finishing / starting) and you were to be speeding, could they penalise you for it? I believe that they would have insufficient proof but he thinks you can be done, any help is much appreciated as its gettin into a annoying debate
Thanks
Thanks

not 100% on this either but they would have to have had the speedo in their car calobrated that day to even have a chance of proving that you were going a certain speed.

Works and plays on track
Only if he holds his phone up to video you!
Maybe but not definitely, if there were two of them but no way one, off duty officer in his own personal car.

policemen/women are never off duty!
My brother in law is a copper and 'technically' they are never off duty, but whether they actually do anything about it is another matter

20K+ Super Poster.
What the cop would need to PROVE to the satisfaction of a court is the offence of speeding.
On or off duty makes no difference at all, but in this instance being off duty means he is NOT in a car with a calibrated speedo, or video camera.
A std cars std speedo is NOT accepted by any court, as being accurate enough, that's why you can be nicked for speeding even if your spedo showed you were NOT speeding but in reality were.
I regularly go past the panda type cars speeding, often in excess of 90-100 on the dual carriageway, they tried a few times to start with telling me etc I said prove it, one even said the galaxy DID have a calibrated speedo, he looked sorely embarrassed when I looked as knew he was lying.
There is a set of rules about speeding, these have to be followed by the police as regards evidence the same as any other offence, you could just laugh at the plod in this situation.
The police spent 11 months trying to convict myself of dangerous driving a few years back, at one point my car was on the wrong side of the road with a unmarked cop car with 5 coppers in it doing "in excess of 100", my car was doing 55, this was witnessed by 5 cops, and was video'd by a speed camera van, trust me the quality of the video was stunning, could read the small print at the bottom of the plate from over 1 mile away.
I elected crown court after doing my research, I walked out of court after 10 minutes or so with case dismissed, thrown out by the judge, this was entirely down to mistakes on the part of the police, even after 11 months and video.

the ANPR cam in a cop car
also takes a speed reading but the cop has to maintain a set speed and distance behind said 'speeder' in order to get an accurate and calibrated reading. ( next door is a traffic cop lol )

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
Iv been followed. When i pulled up mr cock flashed his badge and told me i was speeding... I did not agree nor disagree with him. He told me he cannot issue anything due to being off duty but can report me. Few days later a very angry call from gome, police wanted to see me with reports of exvessive speed. They were asked for evidence to be supplied and that if they supplied this i would come to the station with a solicitor.... Funny that i heard no more.

I'm sure I posted on here years ago about my altercation with an off duty copper on London Road in St Albans. He shouted off and waved his warant card at me, I called him several things and about a week later a letter came through regarding the incident where I was invited to discuss it. I went in and was interviewed denied everything and nothing further was ever mentioned on the subject
