I'll be looking for a new car in a few weeks, I'll be doing a fair millage so i want something that can return a decent MPG and be comfortable for the commuting and have a decent turn of speed for a bit of fun at the weekends.
my thinking at the moment is a volvo S60 D5, they can get chipped to 225-240 bhp, and a load of torque
my other thought is maybe a bmw 530d
my budget is going to be around the 3k mark
any other suggestions?

Something like this is unbeatable for the money imo, had a 330d previous to this and prefer the merc .Hard to beat for the money i think

I`m looking for a 330d sport at the minute, I think about 5k upwards is what you need to spend. Very interested in the 300bhp one, any more info?

Think you gus are missing the point a bit he says he is looking to spend £3k so a 330d or 530d for that money will have been to the moon and back and could well be on its last legs
For the money I would suggest a Bora TDI same as the Golf but overlooked cos its not the GTI but you can still get the plush Highline spec. The VAG 1.9 Tdi PD engine will easily take a remap to 180/190bhp and still return good mpg. A Passat is the same but bigger, or similarly Octavia.

DO NOT BUY A MONDEO STTDCI UNLESS YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF GRAND TO ONE SIDE FOR WHEN NOT IF IT BREAKS BECAUSE IT WILL TRUST ME I HAVE REPAIRED LOADS AND LOADS OF THESE VERY COSTLY TO KEEP FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME SHAME AS THEY ARE NICE WHEN RIGHT sorry for shouting but had to get my point across lol

not true i had an m reg 530td that cost me 500quid and was like brand new, yes not as capable as the newer shaped ones but still destroyed my mate easily in his tuned saxo vtr down a dual carraigeway returning 45mpg at the time, the thing was in timewarp condition as well it could easily have been at a bmw show up on those little ramps with mirrors underneath no bullshit!! i made a tidy grand selling that on and regretted it ever since it was the second mintest car i have ever owned after my cossie
