Stuck lifter possibly?

I had the same experience, when i went on the dual carriage way and put my foot down one of the lifters kept sticking, turned out it was badly domed so i changed it and it never happend again..Few things you can check for, Hope you find the problem soon though.

When you say top end are you meaning from the top of the engine?
On the rebuild did you have the head rebuilt also? I would whip the rocker cover off and have a look at your lifters/cam

sounds like you could so with getting the car to an RS turb specialist for a checkover at the very least mate. why guess and randomly start swapping parts when they will KNOW what the issue is and just change any parts that need it

First what is chapping lol?
secondly glad it has sorte ditself (for now), as mentioned above a faulty lifter not opening the valve properly. Might be a good time to get a new set of good quality lifters (and maybe a cam while your at it)? Not a hard job, can be done without removing the head. Also give it fresh oil and make sure you run the cam/lifters in properly. Ideas on this vary slightly but the main thing is to avoid idle for the first half hour and use plenty of lube (that's what she said!).

Good luck mate

I had a K reg, 1.4 orion cvh with a blocked rear breather that somehow used to stop the lifters functioning correctly. I presume crank case pressure was stopping oil getting to top end???

Now you've described what happens this makes sense, I told a lad I knew what had happened when my car broke down, he said pull the breather pipe off that runs from rocker cover into the block and check the stub on the block is clear, or more so he told me mine would be blocked, he was correct. Worth checking out for the time it takes, I unblocked mine and fitted new lifters and it was alright for a months till I got rid.

I hated the car so when I unblocked it I just pushed all the crap into the sump

If your is blocked I would remove the sump, as you don't want all the crap floating about

i personally think it would do no harm to change the leads plugs rotor arm and cap tbh as he said its only happening when hot and the engine is running quiet so for me that would expel valve or lifter, sounds ignition related to me but thats only my opinion
