on a petrol yes...

on a diesel... its vapourised smoke or coolant.

Does it smell sickly sweet?

I dont have a cossie but on my XR i had a problem with my engine stalling. It was spitting white smoke back out of the air filters. I was convinced this was leaking head gasket and changed it - but it wasn't. It turned out to be knackered disbributor and the white smoke was just normal combustion smoke being spat out when the engine stalled.

yup a std gasket will do stage 1 fine...

but time is the issue... as they age they weaken and eventually fail!
