the wiring loom to the plug on the alternator fella causes loadsa problems on these ,follow it back in the loom .also have a bloody good look at the plug, this is smart charge i presume, if it is try the above, if no luck unplug the plug the alternator will default and charge at 50 amps warning light out if it doesnt do this the alternator is faulty fella hope this helps

as said mate, have you checked the multi plug that goes into the alternator? will have three wires coming out of it,

Check these wires as they can break, common issue.

Also try your fusebox for any blown fuses,I had this on an xr2i,wasn't an obvious fuse either but after changing the alternator on my mums drive using only a few basic crap happy shopper tools and a tablelamp in the rain I was mighty pissed off the batt light still glowed, before the days of Internet forums I'm afraid!!!
Checked fuses and one had blown, changed it and the batt light went off!!!!!

Isn't 14.5 volts a little high ? I thought normally they should be around 12.5 and if the alternator was overcharging it would cause the light to be on ?

Ive had the same prob on my 2001 1.8 zetec petrol ,ive traced the wires back to the ecu plug ,done continuity test on the wires and all were ok,all that the wires do that come from that plug on the alternator is for the ecu to read the out put voltage of the alternator ,and the ecu puts the battery light on or off , my light comes on intermitant ,the prob is there fore in the ecu ,i know all this cos i contacted the diagnostic doctor in a certain car mag ,there are loads with the same prob ,i got fooled by it and fitted a new alternator at first (110 pound down the drain) so long as you know your battery and alternator are ok you could just live with it ,my light has gone off and not been on for few months ,but other times it flicks on and off ,i dont know if there is a fix for thr ecu ,hope this helps (14+volts at the batery with engine running is correct).
