having just sold a car through autotrader, this is my 2p's worth.
paid 30 odd quid to advertise my VW Polo 2003 (53) 1.9 Tdi sport, advertised for £3150. had 3 phone calls on it, 2 people turned up and the 2nd person bought it.
The girl that bought it said she never even looked on ebay and said it was full of idiots and timewasters and would never buy anything off there.
to be honest it did surprise me a little what she said, and now i wouldnt hesitate to put something on autotrader.
i think autotrader doesnt have the timewasters/ dreamers that ebay attracts, probably because autotrader is a dedicated vehicle site.
cheaper stuff i sell i'd whack on ebay as its cheap, the more expensive stuff will be going on Autotrader in the future.

Dont know how useful it is there. But last two vehicles Ive sold were via Gumtree.
It is full of arseholes and stupid adverts. But it's free and there are some genuine buyers. All it takes is one buyer.

autotrader is quite expensive at £44 but you know if you get the calls they are genuine, ebay is full off messers and people who want something for nothing especially as you can't leave the buyer negotive feed back so they can bid with no intention of buying.

Never sold on autotrader but agreed as above I would only ring someone off there if I was genuinely interested whereas on eBay I always email as if the person doesn't seem to want to come to the party I just look elsewhere, autotrader cars often seem much better prepared as well as IMO their mostly traders or genuine sellers,eBay has a lot of chancers on it basically hoping to get above scrap value for some real shitters.

auctions on ebay are usualy a complete ball ache and full of messers, so if you use ebay go for a classified add then they have to come down with the cash.
that way they cant bid and not turn up. i just had a messer who wanted the log book a recipt hpi check and also a photo copy of my licence
as for the hpi and logbooks fine but he was not copying my licence told him to do one
wierd one but there ya go.

Pistonheads is the best imo.
U get a lot of interest off ebay, but its usually complete idiots offering u swaps for a toaster or some stupid pit bike with one wheel

Pistonheads first as it is free - some dicks but generally a wide audience and good results.
After a week stick it in the autotrader BUT imo people tend to price the cars keenly as it is costing so make sure it is priced right. Seems to be mainly trader on autotrader nowerdays. The site gets on my tits though, so bogged down with advertising.
Ebay has to be classified ads.
Gumtree will result in 100 nigerian emails, a lottery win, offers to swop for just about everything init, some dodgy callers and the odd genuine person.
Pistonheads is the first port of call though imo.
