What happens if you get caught towing trailer with out trailer license?
as above?
is it points and fine or just fine?
or its it ok if you have a passenger in the car that has his class 1?
reson i ask is my mate wants to borrow my car trailer, i've told him about license etc as he only has standard UK license, i have my class 1 so i think i'd be ok if i went with him?

PassionFord Post Whore!!
With no trailer licence you are effectively driving with no licence.
It's easier to understand the severity and penalty if you look at it that way.
Class 1 doesn't automatically entitle you to drive a car with a trailer. If your class 1 is after 1997 you still need a B (+E ) entitlement

But as said, the answer of towing a trailer without the licence is the same as driving anything without a licence.

A frames are legal but only if the car you are towing is legal, ie taxed and tested. Again though you need to have the correct entitlement on your licence. What alot of people don't seem to realise is that its all to do with weight too. So to put it in easy terms you cant carry a cossy saph on a b/ James double axle trailer if youre towing it with a smaller car, say an escort. This is due to a weight imbalance, they are very strict on towing these days

i've always wondered that. Having passed my test after 1997, to tow a trailer over 750kg i will have to sit a B+E test. I've gone to sit it a few times then thought against it since my work has been saying they would put me through my class 1. I assumed this would entitle me to B+E? or thats my understanding of it??
But as said, the answer of towing a trailer without the licence is the same as driving anything without a licence.

but in 2009 i passed my class 1 so this gives you the entitlement automatically to pull a trailer over 750kg because i have my class 1.

You do realise that Class 1 DOESN'T cover the +E (i think it's E?) on your car license, right ?
Both my dad and our Artic driver at work when renewing their licenses queried it as it was removed and were told that Class 1 doesn't cover it car + trailer.

thats bollocks......... I have my licence in front of me right now,
i passed my class 1 in 2007, entitlements shown on my licence are as follows
B car
BE car plus trailer
B1 luton(I think)
C class 2
CE Artic
C1E class2 + draw bar
just for the record i passed my car test in 2003
also DVLA cant remove entitlements without reason, this is why you should always photo copy your licence before you return to them as its the only proof you have

Right lads,
I've got a transit connect t230 which iirc weighs is a tad over 2 ton, I've made my own lightweight trailer. Weighs no more the 300 kgs plus my race car in at around 700kgs.
Now would I be legal?
Gonna do my trailer test anyway to save all the hastle just wondering realy.
When I've takes to a few different police, one vosa they said as long as the load all looks secure and not dangerous they won't stop you as they don't wanna be stuck with the van load plus trailer! This was a few years ago tho probley got stricter by now

ha ha tell me another joke, that's the best one I've heard this year!!
Ever watch TV, listen to the radio, people HAVE had entitlements removed AND lost jobs AND had to resit the tests they already passed, it's the biggest scam DVLA are pulling at the moment, it is particularly the case with motorcylce entitlement, even the plod are not immune to dvla, a officer from norfolk was put on desk duty after dvla REMOVED his motorcycle entitlement, bit awkward when you're a bike cop, and a bike instructor, long story short dvla prosecuted but 9 months without correct license.

Me & my brother work with vans and were both legal to tow trailers even though it aint on our license!! It goes by weights mostly. He had a accident and thought he was going to get hung but traffic officer explained it didnt matter as the trailer he had was matched by the weights in van etc so take this how you like but he explained you cant tow a trailer with a escort for example but could tow said trailer with a van. So dont know what is correct or if laws up here in scotland are different? Or maybe traffic officer thick as mince

this is why I said to photo copy the licence before you send it to them as they dont keep records of what entitlements you have held, they only hold records of the most upto date licence,
Im fully aware of issues with people getting their licences back with entitlements missing,
if you photo copied it before you sent it to them you would have proof that the entitlements WHERE there when you sent it to them
