I got entitlement on my license
I'm old

I've been offered a st200 estate and want to tow my track saff on trailer .
I'm sure the car towing has to be heavier than car and trailer but unsure.

So is a st mondeo legal to tow ?
St good at towing then ?

Even without looking up the towing limits for the ST, it won't be legal.
It never is to tow a car of similar weight, on a trailer, with another.
4 X 4, L/rover etc. is the only guaranteed exception.

Or a van.

I think as long as the towed unit doesnt exceed the GVW of the tow vehicle, or some percentage of it then it is legal.

But the laws are that fucked up, it's hard to know.

But will still be illegal for most due to weights etc. Unless it's a very light car and trailer.

Simply look on the "weight" stamped plate on the slam panel, that's the first place plod will look if they stop you.
I've towed a mk1 mondy ghia 2.0 with a mk2 astra 1600 auto, didn't get stopped, if you think it's scary stopping a sierra/trailer with s ST220, try stopping a rangey whilst towing with a metro, scary stuff!!

Saph needs to be taxed and MOT'd to be on an A Frame.

Oh and insured now too.

That's for the Mk3 ST220. Ford advised against fitting them. It's not a problem on the Mk2.

the towing weight of a mondeo is around 1800kg, which is way more than the mondeo weighs, as is the tow weight of a lot of cars, it has nothing at all to do with the weight of the tow vehicle, as any trailer has to have working brakes if over 750kg, so the tow vehicle isn't doing all the stopping. if the trailer brakes are knackered then there is an issue, people that talk about trailers having to be lighter then tow vehicle and only aloud to tow 85% the weight of tow vehicle need to shut up and let people who know what they are talking about answer the question, i've been towing for the last 25 years, as long as the max towing weight is kept under, and the train weight is kept under you will be fine, i would say with a sierra on the trailer you would be very close to limit, but you would have to weigh it to see if over or under.

A-frame will fall very foul of unbraked weight laws for virtually any car.

And according to this.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/forms/~/m...ets/INF30.ashx

The weight of the trailer when fully loaded, cannot weigh more than the unladen weight of the vehicle.
It is quite clear about that for most license categories

So according to the DVLA, despite BMW saying 530 can tow 2000kg. If the Unladen weight is 1700kg, then legally here in the UK it cannot tow more than 1700kg.
