The easiest way to summarise the changes is:

If your car is NOT insured, then it has to be declared as off the road.

So really it's no change at all for those of us that insure/sorn cars anyway.

If your car always falls into one of the following:

It is SORN
It is Taxed and Insured

Then NO change

If your car falls into the following category:

Taxed but not insured as not currently in use (ie people who tax their car for 6 months then just insure it for a couple of weekends for shows etc)

Then it will effect you

If your car is on the road and not SORN or Taxed, then you're already breaking the law so no change.

Won't affect me in the slightest as I have access to the MID and simply add cars to my list as I get them

An additional summary for those finding it EXTREMELY difficult to understand.

If it's TAXED, it MUST be INSURED, whether it's on or off the road.(assuming SORN cancels tax on the database)

If it's NOT TAXED it MUST be SORN, whether it's insured or not.

SORN cancels TAX,whether you return it for refund or not.(see note above)

SORN DOESN'T cancel INSURANCE

SORN and INSURANCE = YES

SORN and TAX =NO

.

It's a pile of wank yet again.

When are they going to arrest and punish the real criminals ? ie the insurance companies themselves.

The law is in place now.
Apparently there is some sort of unofficial 1 month amnesty though, but I dont know if that is just rumour.

If your car is taxed and not insured you are breaking the law and liable to an 80 pound fine, so SORN or insure it straight away to avoid that.

Or you will have to pay an 80 quid fine, depending on if the months grace is nonsense or not, you'll find out soon I guess!

Has to be on MID I believe.
I can add cars to it by text, would imagine most trade policies are similar

Yes you have to SORN every year.

The DVLA send a reminder, but they arent obligated to do so and you are the person responsible for keeping track of the dates to ensure that your cars are SORN at the correct time, so claiming the reminder didnt arrive isnt a valid excuse.

who is to say you sent the letter? its not recorded post, i got away with this once, sold a car on a sorn to a mate, he kept it on a public road, i got the letter as i never changed the name, but i sent a letter to dvla saying i had sent it off and that it must have been lost in the post. Never heard another thing about it

They send you a confirmation letter to say they received yours, if you dont receieve that letter its YOUR liability to contact them about it.

Even in that situation it is technically still your fault and these days they seem to be hotter on it, again they send a confirmation letter to you and if you dont receive it you have to contact them to find out why.

They are firmly putting the responsibility with all these matters in the hands of the owner.

And you have to SORN when the car changes owners/keepers and remains off road.

So if you buy a car on SORN you MUST SORN it in your name.

Just spoke to the DVLNI about my sitution and it turns out it only applies to England and not northern ireland so im good to keep my old car on private property taxed and mot'd until the number plate changes over.
