Default Headlining? Anyone done it?

Hello,

So i almost got the headlining out tonight (got fucked off with the sunroof having two rusty screws )

Anyway i was wondering how to stick it back down? Have any of you done this and can give me some tips?

What glue do i need to buy and do halfords sell it?

Also there is some old foam thats orange and was wondering do i need to rub this off? or replace it? It will come off easy but should i do it?

I know i should go get it done by a pro but i just dont have the money at the moment but dont want to slow down my project.

Any help with me great thanks

The orange foam should be attached to the material, you can buy the material at a few trimming shops around and they will sell the glue also.

Yep, better off getting some new material and make a pukka job, they do look sweet when done, make sure you get the glue that his heat resistant as the ones i have seen that have let go is because in the summer when the roof gets hot hot hot it makes the glue let go and you will be back to square one.

The 3dr has bare plastics on the pillars etc so only need enough for the actual roof panel so should be fine for me, only need a little spare to sent Raj so he can flock the sunroof panel to match

Yeah i used new material mate, pealed the old stuff off then spent hours trying to gently scrape the old glue off, re-glued then laid the new material on a bit at a time so it was nice and neat with no creases etc, took a while but worth it.

I uesd my old material both times.I scraped all the orange shit off the board part of the head lining then sprayed the glue on left it for a bit then stuck the cloth back down.A few months later it justed sagged again.

Glenn, you need to completely remove all the old stuff and use new material really. I used a DA sander to do mine.

Before:

Part-cleaned using DA:

New material going on:
Name: NewLiningLooselyTrimmed2.jpg
Views: 1103
Size: 42.3 KB

It didn't come out perfect mind you, but the imperfections were hidden when the rooflining was in place and all the other parts screwed back on. What didn't help was that I was doing this on one of the hottest days of the year, inside a workshop and the glue was setting almost as soon as it was applied

I got my stuff from East Kent Trim supplies, cost about Ł33 delivered, but that was a year or two ago, so prices would probably have gone up.

Yeah pictures would be great!

I might be sounding daft but is it hard to get a good finish? as in smooth. Would using a rounded bit of skirting help with this?

Also when using the old bit as a template will it have not stretched over the time? Or will this not matter?

R5FORD: Loving the black, again mine would look weird in a magenta.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

why would it look weird in a magenta?

dont use your old cloth as a template you have no need to, clean the headlining board up so ithas no old foam on it and is clean

then spray glue on board and cloth, but only do a bit at a time as it will stick very quickly, but take your time getting into all the grooves etc, you will need to trim as you go along as when you go into a groove it creates a crease and can be a bitch to get out, two people ideally due to the size of cloth

The magenta is not black i just think it may look odd in any other colour than black, would like to see someones in magenta to see if its weird.

Ill have to take pictures of how i get on and show the world! I think ill try the pillars first as they will be easy. I will have a measure up to make sure i have enough, i need to do the 4i's as well so maybe cheaper to buy it all at once.

if you have leather and black dash then black head lining and c pillars would be a lot better so its all black

the plastics you can just paint, but changing it to blackmeans the sunroof has to come out to take the cover off, this can be painted black along with the seal for the sunroof, thats what idid

but if you go grey again, you will have to take the sunroof part out anyhow to try and get it as clean as the head lining and it will never ben the same colour no matter how hard you try to clean it due to the type of material used on this sunroof cover

I've done hundreds of liners over the years, my frs is full black alcantara pillers and liner and looks the biz very expensive tho!

Peel the old material off and rub the old foam of with your fingers, if theres any chunks out of the board now's the time to skim the area with filler and sand smooth.

8-10 time i've found the board has sticky patches on it from the old glue which needs sorting as your get a glue reaction so the new glue wont go off properly so the board need a key coat (should do this anyway), best stuff to use is pvc glue, wait for that to dry and give it a sand to remove any lumps and bumps

Glue wise tined airosole glue is wank for liners i defo would'nt use it a customers cars, idealy you need a air compresser, a spray gun and some good glue

Easy way to trim the board is to strike a line of glue down the middle of the board (front to back) and the same on the material 3-4 inches wide stick it down the middle and work your way out, hope this help

I have not taken pictures of taking it out but will knock something up to make a how to. I have taken pictures of everything so far and hoping to order the lining stuff soon.

It was something like 2 maybe 3 hours as i had no clue what i was doing and had to drill two screws out for the sun roof then i had to find a drill bit. Then got fucked off with everything had a paddy and broke something so tried it the next day.

But now i know what to do and if i never had to drill anything out then i would say 30 mins tops.
But then again to remove it from the boot then you have to remove some other bits as mine never went though first try and im not sure if you can have the rear seats in? Even though i took mine though the back door... So that may add time.

Like i said ill do a how to on this the best i can.

Do you do this for a living ?

Any pointers or tips for replacing the headlining in an older car that doesnt use a solid backing ?
Or is it a nightmare ?

Dont really see what holds the headlining in place though when there is no base. Any info on how it's done ?

i could probably get pics but you simply undo the grab handles from above the doors and remove the rear trim panels (they pop out) and then strip back the door rubber strips and it should all fall out

assuming you've removed the sunroof trim

i've got a car to pull apart so i may take some pics in a bit

Quick Reply: Headlining? Anyone done it?
