Default Engine balancing

Is this really worth doing?

The reason I ask is I have just had my crank ground and was speaking with the place that done it and they will do my 2wd bottom end for £150

Its only stage 3 so is this really worth doing?

Balancing the bottom end will make the engine smoother and feel a whole lot better. I know that Cosworth carried out the same process when they made the engine, but that was quite some time ago and even then they may not have done it to a very high tolerence?

Worth getting it done at that price imho.

£150 to carryout gas flowing a head is very cheap.......

Balancing is always worth it, especially if your crank has been reground to make sure its all fine, have a lok in the latest fast ford mag, they've done an article on it.

Balancing will not equal more power capacity, the strength of the materials will ultimatley determine that, along with engine spec etc, but it will help to ensure that it will not shake itself apart, esspecially if you raise the rev range

What I meant was if I had 2 std bottom ends but 1 was balanced would that 1 handle more over the std 1

No it would not handle any more power then an un-balanced engine, just possibly last longer

if they are prepared to balance all of that for £150 then have it done.

people always say dont get this and that done at different power levels but more balanced an engine is whether its standard or heavily modified the better!

Ford balance to a MASS production setting, not to the much finer degree done by engine shops, due to labour/time involved.
If they balance the engine to a finer degree it will be better end of, especially at higher rpm putting less load on the engine components, for those that don't agree about balancing why not just go and take OFF your wheel balance weights and drive like that all the time, or do you think it makes a difference ?
I get all my engines balanced, even having the rods done end to end, so matched little ends and matched big ends, the difference is VERY noticeable.
The flywheels are very heavy on 2wd cossie at 8.9KG, 4wd are 9.2-9.7KG(they vary), so lightening has a disproportionately good effect, a basic lighten will see the 2wd down to 6.6KG by skimming out a mass of material at the rear surrounding the ring gear.
Lightening rods and pistons is also ace when you consider the forces at 7000rpm, they are going up and down 116 times a SECOND, that's to the top, dead stop, full reverse, dead stop full reverse direction again, any weight that can be taken off helps longevity.
I have had every engine I've built balanced, some lightened, always been very noticeable smoothness wise.
Balancing the flywheel is good, esp where done seperate, they are balanced to be neutral, that's why they have marks on them but can always be improved upon.

its always worth balanceing any engine take away any vibrations and makes it rev much smoother. Not so sure about lightening the flywheel that much on a turbo engine though
