Hello,
I am having a little problem getting stainless steel to a mirror finish.
I have gone all the way up to 2500 grit with wet and dry then this paste like stuff on a buffing wheel.
I have took the plunge and brought this from halfords
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165594
But am abit lost with how to use the bars... I did try and spin the wheels on the bars hoping it would rub off but it doest seem to want to rub off on the wheel.
Where am i going wrong? I know im thick at the best of time but i thought this was simple! Something im doing is wrong here.
Many Thanks Eigdoog

Stainless steel heat shield.
oooo Wet the wheels abit then spin them on the bars?
I didnt know you could get 4000 wet and dry, 2500 is like plain paper anyway lol.
I have sanded it down with 2500 then this paste stuff and with no joy so i brought that other stuff at halfords.
Am i on the right track?

Mate this might sound like a stupid question but are you using the edge of the buffing wheels or the flat part? You should be using the edge of the wheel and you just get the wheel up to speed, press the polishing compound on to it to "dress" the wheel then press your work piece on to it but at the same time move the work piece around to get even polishing but beware, if it's a fairly small part it will get quite hot. We use them at work and to be honest i've never known them to be wetted first and we get perfectly polished parts.
Ideally what you need is something like this (see link below) with a calico polishing mop on it instead of the grinding wheels shown.

Yeah im using the edge, but when i go to dress the wheel one of them (corse) just eats away at the bar.
The medium one seems to do it just right and the fine one spins on the bar then nothing happens.
Also had do i go about cleaning these wheels? one now has black on it from the metal.

wheel needs to be damp not soaking in order to take the compund, otherwise the compund dust wont stick to it.
once theyve been used a bit, then you wont needto damp it as much as the old compound will adhere to the new.
when polishing the stainless, try to keep going in 1 direction not in circles etc, follow the grain of the steel if you can see it,same when your wet and drying.
4000 paper is very very fine, just the job for this kinda work
