They have to do it by law mate. If you want illegal plates you may get wrong off the police like I did for having " RS SCOOBY SLAYER " written under mine.

Been warned before on a number of occasions for my old plates so just got rid of them.
ive been done for plain number plates, they ARE illegal unless they have the post code/address of the place they were made and British standard number on them (BS145d) or something like that.
Another exception is that the rules came into effect in September 2001. Plates fitted before that do NOT need to show maker/postcode.
Also, I don't think it's an MOT fail.
I have 2 pre-2001 cars, one has the original plates which DEFINITELY have no postcode.
The other has newer Halfords plates (with GB symbol for foreign travel), you have to look VERY HARD from specific angles to see the supplier details, they're effectively invisible to a casual glance.

There are ALOT of rules for licence plates BUT being an MOT fail is a load of bollocks. In general they wont check. Ive had an arguement with VOSA when the police tryed fining me for the 3rd time this is after Ive changed it to the spec they asked andI said to them that if it was illegal then it should have been pulled up during the MOT which it wasnt. I personally think that you cant rely on all testers as SOME are lazy, or they are not informed in whats legal and whats not. Ive heard the same storie over and over. You have plates on your car which go through the MOT then you get told by the police that they're illagal.
Its the same with my reverse lights. They dont work and aint gonna work long story and I was told by a copper that it was a legal requirement...wrong! Its a legal requirment for makers to fit them but they dont even check them in the test!

Slik is exactly right, they won't fail an MOT unless the car is newer than 2006 ( I think ).

The postcode side of it doesn't come into the mot all the tester has to check is the sizing and font if they are correct it is a pass.
No plates are a grey area there has been lots of changes to the legislation so it does get confusing.
Anyone supplying road plates needs to be registered and correctly stamp plates.
Hence why you get 'show plates' they are not legal for road use.
All new plates bought now must have all markings.
Not that my cossie has any of these other than the rear plate being correct size!
