Default Cossie YB's burn oil but do Evo 4G63's ???

We all know that the YB engine uses a lot of oil compared with most modern engines, with Ford even providing their warning on the original Cosworth owners paperwork regarding X amount of oil consumption every Y miles.

I just wondered how this compares to the 4G63 engine in the Evo 4 onwards, since this is another inline 4 cylinder 2 litre turbocharged engine and even has the same alloy head / iron block combo too ?

Cheers !

Evos I know burn A LOT of oil from new. Actually Mitsubishi imported 7 Evo's 7 to POland and one of them had engine failure few hundred km's after being collected from dealer from lack of oil. The driver just drove it hard for some kilometer on the motorway and engine exploded very visually (bottom-end parts steaking out). Even new ones are known to spit about 1 litre per 1000km through breather too.

To be honest most sports engines will use a certain amount of oil anyway regardless of Marque ,

I think thats I-VTEC, not standard Vtec standard VTEC works of oil pressure and is technically very simple IMO. I-VTEC I couldn't be arsed reading

Yeah and at thirty sheets a can..... that's not funny!

Just read the handbook and it says "The oil consumption of the engine may be as much as 1 litre per 620 miles" I knew it was six something!

i can honestly say, my evo 6 gsr with the 350 conversion did not use any noticable abmount of oil between oil services of 3Kmiles. that was running on mobil 1 0-40 and i neever had any problem with tappets like some other people did.

ok lets compair early 70s engines with late 90s ones... they are only 30 years apart..

What I ment is that its not FAIR to compair engine of such different eras.

Yes, it's very unfair to compare it like that. I only tryied to say that any turbo petrol with high boost must use noticable quantities. Or let's say most of them will.

Turbo cars usually use less oil...

The rings are sealed harder against the bore by the boost.

The Inlet and Exh ports of the head are under higher pressure so tend to blow the oil back into the head.

But if your turbo is knackered... thats another stroy all together!

I understand that high performance engines will generally use a bit of oil where as modern shopping cars usually won't but going back to my original question, why does the YB burn more oil than a 4G63 ?

Surely if it's just down to build tolerances then a freshly build YB shouldn't use drastically more than the Evo engine ? (assuming adequate oil breathing setup on both engines).

Any engine burns oil. Only sometimes to little for us to notice.

design...

material...

you can make a cosworth YB as good as new... or even better... but is that going to be a tight a tollerance as a new 4g63?
